No I wouldnt change the starter ring, unless it showed evidence of wear that would cause your starter to begin missing at some point. But I would change the DMF.

I just dont trust rubber centered pieces to last...

Unlike your current Freudenberg, the LUK has the starter ring gear welded to it so you won't have much of a choice.

Sorry to hijack, but I am looking at 964s, both C2 and C4, and would like to know more about DMF.

Can anyone post what are the issues.

Also, if I understand this thread correctly, service records that show clutch replacement does not neccesarily means that the DMF was also replaced. Corect?

Did all 964s use the DMF? Is there a difference between C2 and C4?
What about 90-91 vs 92-93?

Agaian, sorry for the hijack, but information would be appreciated.

Issues are : DMF can disintegrate. However - bearing in mind that even the newest 964 is likely to be 13 years old, I'd say that it's not an issue - either it's been replaced by a LUK (which doesn't disintegrate) or it's not going to fail.

It's correct that a clutch replacement doesn't mean the DMF was replaced - but that will be because it wasn't worn and didn't need to be. I just had a clutch replaced - I was told my DMF had 30-40K miles left in it.

89 C4s didn't use a DMF. The rest did.

In summary - if I was buying a 964 I would care more about whether it had recently had a clutch / whether it would soon need a clutch (which is a relatively expensive consumable) than whether it still had the original DMF which occasionally failed (but seems to have lasted 13-16 years in the car I was viewing).

Hope this helps.

The C2 & C4 were delivered with the original Freudenberg DMF for MY90. For MY91 and most of MY92 the C2 had a modified Freudenberg and in late MY92 finally received the LUK. The C4 and the Turbo from MY91-MY94 had the modified Freudenberg and generally didn't have any problems.

Well thank you all for the input. I've made a decision to first do the timing-belt R&R on my supercharged 4Runner, so if I find something ugly while working on the 964, I don't have any other impending issues to deal with on the driving vehicle.

I'm going to dive in and do the clutch and anything I can get to seal & gasket wise. I'm leaving the heads & cyls on and going to try to make it past the 200k mile mark because I take a certain amount of joy in getting the most usage I can out of something before rebuilding it. It will probably be a couple weeks before I get started on this.

I'll still gladly pickup someone's used LUK DMF in the meantime.

Rob, are you going to need that magnetic pickup before you get started? Still sitting in my toolbox if you do.

Good point on the starter ring. I suppose it shouldn't really be on the list.

Kirk
p.s. Heads arrived today. New guides, valves, valve springs, retainers, machined for sealing ring, etc.
