grrr. frustrating world.
I am close with mcmaster, except for the coating.
I want:

Metric Socket Head Cap Screws
M10-1.5x80 8.8 Zinc
M12-1.75x80 8.8 Zinc

Mcmaster has 12.9, but in plain/black oxide/blue coat

I couldnt find anything close at the other mentioned sites. (Not to say they haven't got them, but there is a million bolts on there!)

Kirk,

Unfortunately I can promise you those will rust in the car. I just used some little ones to hold on that plastic wire loom part over the fan. About a yr later there is some surface rust on them.

Now dont get me wrong, those bolts are very good and strong. I saw on here somebody was sending out some bolts to be dichromated. Further I "think" you can get a dichromate kit and do the job in your oven. i'm pretty sure this is the case, as I ran across this on one of my research internet sprawls.

If you get desperate you could consider this.

Good luck!

Kirk,

When i posted mccmaster I didnt realize you were in Europe and unfortunately I dont know if this suggestion is good for europe either.

I think I found what you'd like to have (me too if I ever need them). Problem is they come in packs of 100.

Check out mscdirect.com

theres a 72073992 that has a blue polymer corrosion resistant finish. Might scratch off, dunno.
67222729 is a zinc plate which is a good standard choice.

probably not useful as the quantities are too high, but just trying to help.

Heirsh

Actually I'm in Canada.

If I had known that getting the Zinc bolts in packs of 10 was going to be so difficult, I could have bought them in plain and sent them out to be Zinc dichromated... But I already sent a batch of parts in for that, and I would hate to see what it would cost to get just 20 bolts done. (They probably have a minimum price/batch)

ah canada. Noted.

I'll look through my suppliers at work tomorrow and see if I can come up with anything else. I'll let you know. I'll likely have to do this same exercise at some point for myself, so I'd like to find a reasonable solution.

I've bought some fasteners from the local fastenal place, but the prices are much higher than McMaster (Fastenal sells small quantities though)

The following are grade 12.9

M12-1.75x80 Zinc http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...ex?sku=0135977

M10-1.5x80 Zinc http://www.fastenal.com/web/products...ex?sku=0135962

Thanx Guys!
Ok got the bolts ordered up from Fastenal.
Now I just have to get to the order for the rest of the brake parts and I'll be set!

Porsche appears to be back ordered on the 28mm seals (indefinetly?)
Looks like its back to stop tech for the 28mms

I ordered up one of these, which should take care of the 28's on the rear calipers.

89-100-2828 StopTech ST40 & ST45, 28mm 28mm $50.00

**UPDATE: Porsche sent me an email the next day saying they had them in stock after all, but by then I had ordered the stoptech seals. C'est la vie.

I received my parts back from the powder coater on the weekend. He did a nice job on the red.
I used high heat white paint on the raised white porsche lettering. Not perfect but it ended up looking ok.

I found it was easiest to spray the high heat white on some paper, and then roll the porsche lettering over the paint. I got about three coats on and it covers the red nicely.

If I ever do this job again, I think I would have used a sanding block on the porsche lettering first, to make it flat and even.

All the other brake parts are on order, so the calipers will have to sit on the shelf for a while now.

Wow look great. my project has stalled a little. Im aaway from worek for around 3 weeks.

Not far from masking the capiers. All have been striped and all holes bloked with pins warpped n PTFE.
Once thats complete i will send em to be powder coated.

Despite being out of town for work waaaay too much, I did manage to finally get the brake calipers put back together.

Here is a brief list of the steps and a pile of pictures for those who are interested.

1. Powder coat calipers & paint embossed porsche symbols white. (I dont think the later years have the raised embossed letters, so you can just use a porsche sticker)
2. Tap the holes in the calipers to remove any stray powder coat, and clean up the threads.
3. Assemble the caliper halves, torque the bolts and use loctite red on the threads.
4. Install the caliper cross line
5. Install the retaining spring. I used a little bit of never sieze at the point where the pins fit into the caliper.
6. Install the retaining plates and their screws.
7. Install the bleeder screw boots on the bleeder screws and mount them on the caliper
7.5 Install the piston seals in the groove in the caliper. The different seals are colour coded for size. You can't put the wrong size in the wrong holes.
8. Install the piston boot on the piston and grease it up with caliper silicone grease. Install the pistons in the caliper, and push the boots into place.
9. Push the dampling plates into the holes in the pistons, and remove the sticky backing.
10. install brake pads.

That seems like a splendid job Kirk. I like the Riviera Blue gloves, a nice touch

Reviving this thread as I am in the middle of a brake caliper refinish project. My question is: I split my calipers and the original bolts came out intact. Can I reuse them or should I order new ones?
