I had a Boxster S. It came after I sold my 1988 Targa. I hated the Boxster. Too civil. I love the 1990 C2 I have now. It smells like a Porsche should, oil and leather. Drives like a Porsche should and sounds great also. The Boxster was a great car, but it was just a car. The 964 has "gestalt".

That's it -- gestalt! I drove a 996 Turbo recently, but it's not worth $50K more than my 964. To me.

Marvellous definition, GESTALT, embodies everything 964 ( I would make it encompass all air cooleds )
Cheers

I was very close to buying a Boxster but the " broke - chanic" in me took over. I'd be pretty miserable
if I couldn't tinker with the car all that much. It looked nearly impossible just to see the motor.

I use my 964 as a daily driver and have done things with it that some 'listers would roll their eyes at!
Try picking up a couple of bags of compost, the laundry, groceries and the dog from the vet all in one trip in a Boxster! The 964 is the only way to go!

I have a 997s and a 964 C2 Cab. I use the 964 more often except for long distance trips now. Enuff said.

gestalt-A physical, biological, psychological, or symbolic configuration or pattern of elements so unified as a whole that its properties cannot be derived from a simple summation of its parts.
Great word.
seaealge- I think it depends on what you're going to do with the car. The 964 could probably be modded to handle as well as a Cayman but you'll be doing the work instead of the car doing it for you, which do you prefer? How long will you be keeping the car? If you're talking a long time then the C4S and Cayman will need parts eventually too.
Man those C4Ss are expensive! I had no idea. I think they're sharp cars nonetheless but you're almost into GT3/993TT money. Anyway, for that kind of cash I know what I'd get.

It's too bad they didn't make a widebody NA 2wd 964. THAT would be awesome.

. It smells like a Porsche should, oil and leather.

Leather and oil how true.My son always complains about the leather smell of my Benz. The Porsche is a different story. He loves it.He'll go so far as to sit in it just for the smell. My GF offten will commit about how wonderful my 964 smells inside. You just can't get that in a Boxster. Then there's that great exhaust note. The Boxster is a fine car,it's just not my kind of car.The bug eyed headlights, slopping rear, air cooled engine, vent windows, and it's pain Jane dash. That's the car for me.And that smell it just smells fast.

Your son sounds exactly like me about 10-15 years ago... Air-cooled cars like my dad's 911 SC (and other air-cooled vehicles like an old VW "Bus" Westfalia), a family friend's 911 Carrera 3.2, and my old Yamaha YZF R6 sportbike all had that oil smell and I like it so much that the smell is one of the main reasons that I had to buy an air-cooled Porsche. I remember I sometimes wouldn't get out of the car because I liked the smell so much... or I would stick my head inside the car and "take a whiff" as I passed it in the garage.

These days, I'll still lean down and sneak a whiff of the motor's smell through the spoiler vent when I pull up somewhere and get out of the car... people probably think I'm crazy.

Some people don't like the smell, and prefer the synthetic "new car smell" or would rather hang a scented tree from their mirror... To these people who don't understand, I try to explain thiat you can't put a price on the smell of an air-cooled Porsche. It's sort of like smelling the webbing of your old baseball glove, it brings back priceless memories.

The Boxster, while being a great (and well-balanced) car in its own right, simply can not provide things like this.

Anyway, you may have a hard core car enthusiast and future Porsche owner on your hands. I can appreciate that.

And Ray proves yet again that he can't take even a little tongue-in-cheek prodding. Exhibit A in the pussification of the modern male.

I love the look of Tom's car but it's not really a 964 anymore. 993 headlights, 993 bumpers...
I'm talking about an old-school widebody like a 964 Turbo but without the big spoiler. Basically a '94 Anniversary model that's a C2 instead of a C4. It would have been the M491 or S version of the 964.
