Euro 993 Variocam Vs US 89c4.
Guys;
We're looking for a wiring diagrams for an Euro 993 Variocam in order to match it with a 89c4, another words, we're dropping an Euro 993 Vcam into a US 1989 c4, and the harness do not match as well as color code issue.
Any feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks
Saki

There is no advantage with a Euro Varioram over a US model. Interesting that you choice that one. The wiring diagrams in the 993 manuals have the variations so they are not US specific so you should be able to use these for your project.

Saki,
Just sit down with the two factory diagrams and make a list ! When I did this job I used a Vario loom and connected it to the 964 main loom.
Memory tells me that there is no wire in the 993 loom for the 964 speedo signal but that was about it.
Tedoious but very straightfoward.
Good luck
Geoff

Hi Geoff;
You're right regarding the speedo signal, we've spent several hours trying to figure out the connection.
I do not have the Euro diagram, and this is my dilemma.. Hopefully, someone from Europe will answer this question for me..
What about the oil sensor.. Do you remember the need for a 993 Vacuum tank?..
Regards!..

Saki,
I posted a VW part number on the 993 forum . The standard 993 Vario vacuum tank is pretty big but there is nowhere to put it on a 964.
Bill has suggested using the 964 vacuum reservoir which may be OK.
993 Varios have so much hassle with lack of vacuum and there is so much more to drive that I went for a bigger tank that would fit. Your choice !
Are you using the 993 Varioram loom or trying to to a swap out ?
Geoff

Hey Geoff;
Yes, I will prefer to use something larger than factory 964 vacuum reservoir, so will looking into the VW's one.. Thanks for the tips..
Yes, I am using the 993 Vram loom.. Is there any advantage by using the Vram loom compared to the 964?.. If so, how did you work it around it.. Thanks again..

Saki,
Its easier using the 993 loom because at least the DME end is correct !
What I did was list where every 964 loom wire goes from the circuit diagrams and the same for the 993 .
That way you can easily see the X1 / X3 etc differences and swap wires to suit.
There really wasnt much to it .The 964 uses a pulse from the gearbox ring gear to drive the speedo but the 993 doesnt ,so the 993 loom is missing that wire. Pretty easy to run one wire alongside the 993 loom .
I have moved country since doing this job ! but if I can find my listing I will PM it to you.
All the best
Geoff

Geoff;
Yes, this is what I am doing and labeled all of the wire from the 993 loom then matched them w/ the 964, so far so good.
Now, what about the speedo connection, did you run another wire from the fuse to the dashboard (feed from an Euro Tuner!..).
Regarding the vacuum issue, will get the VAG's vacuum reservoir/tank, did call the dealer and it's about $50 a piece. Now, is the meaning of Vacuum cannister same the Vacuum reservoir?..
Thanks so much.

Saki,
I cant find my conversion list at the moment. ! All I remember is that there is no speedo wire in the 993 loom so you have to run a seperate wire from the gearbox sensor down to the block under the seat to pick up the 964 loom connection.
I have tons of stuff that still needs sorting , so I guess the list is in there !!
Soon as I get some time I will have a good search . All the best
