Default The ticking sound

Can someone describe, or better yet, provide a WAV file with the sound of an engine with an out of adjustment valve causing the ticking sound?

I just did my second valve adjustment (first on this car). Probably just lack of sleep and general paranoia but I have no idea what a bad job sounds like. My engine sounds OK to me and seems to be running OK, but I really don't have enough data points to know.

Thanks for any insights.
Chris

Sorry ......
tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick , tick .

If you give it a little gas the ticking speeds up .

Wish I had a sound clip before I did mine. It should be quite when starting up cold and get louder as it warms up.

This seems counter intuitive to me. Don't all of the metal parts "grow" as they get warm? I should think that would tend to close the gap and make the valves quieter as they get hotter?

What am I missing here?

Thanks,
Dave

Andrew, you can see more pictures of my car at http://www.mts.net/~chuzare/porsche%20911.htm
It is Murano Green.

Dave,

Before my valves were adjusted they sounded fine cold. Go for a ride and get it hot and they were very loud.

CH- thanks for the pictures! A couple of quick things I noticed-

Since I don't use a front license plate, I took those off-white things off my front (and kept them in case some future owner wants to put a front license on) and got the color matched plugs from some guy/company that advertises in Porsche Panorama. The only thing is he had a bunch of colors available (my car is black which is common), but he probably doesn't have your color on the website. If you call & he can match to your color it would really make the front look nice (your car already does look nice of course).

The other quick thing is the bezel by the ignition switch. I got a new one from Tweeks or Pelican (don't remember which)- the whole round piece just unscrews around the ignition switch. It wasn't until my 3rd 911 that I realized you could buy that part and how easily that part changed out- they tend to get that whiteish haze after a while.

Very unique color- I like it!

By the way, my apologies on my contributions to hijacking this thread- the original question on ticking noise was unanswered - Sorry loot 87

dave, cold oil is thick oil. thick oil masks valvetrain noise. tjn/vk
