what a difference it makes to be able to see - windshield replacement!!!
Today I had my windshield replaced on my C4 widebody. What a difference!!! It was so stone chipped that whenever I drove into the sun, I was blinded by all the knicks in the windshield to the point where I could not see if a stoplight was red/yellow/green - quite dangerous actually. Well, no longer!!!
I had a company come and install the windshield - factory glass (not OEM), for $475 installed. The OEM version would have been $427 installed. I read from others on here it was around $1000+ which kept me from doing it... boy what a difference it makes to have new glass. I honestly feel like I am driving a new car... now I know what a difference it makes, and that it's a lot cheaper than anticipated/reported, might just change out the race car's which is just as bad.

Interesting that you were able to get factory glass for that price. My insurance company has recently paid right around $900 for the factory glass and then additional for the installation.

Garrett... Was this a national company that did the install or a local one? I need to have mine replaced after a huge rock hit us several months ago.
Did they come to your house to do this?

I called the local porsche shop, Black Forest here in San Diego, who does all of my tech inspections for racing. They told me they "farm out" the work to a company called Elite Auto Glass (I guess they're local). They came to my office yesterday - 2 days after I called them - they just needed 1 day lead time to get the glass from their distributor. I don't know what brand the OEM version is; but I figured it wasn't that much more to get the factory glass.
I asked the guy if he could come to my house to do the race car, and he said they do Porsche race cars all the time. Based on my great experience, I'd say call your local shop that services Porsches, and I am sure they can refer you to someone who's good, who does the process the way it's supposed to be done. I am thrilled from the experience - especially after everyone was claiming it cost them over $1000 to have it done, I was shocked when the lady quoted me $475 installed!!! I had to restate it to her... four hundred seventy five dollars????

Are these things not covered by insurance in the US? I have had my front screen replaced once already and need it done again as a result of stone chips leading to small cracks. Neither case has been an immediate problem as they were both on the passenger side and only grew to a few inches long but it only cost me £60 and the insurance company picked up the rest without it having any impact on my no claims bonus.

Hi Jim, which was the company who did the replacement, and where you happy with the service. My screen is pretty worse for wear, but I'm quite nervous about any old person replacing it !

Its free in Florida by law if its cracked. Stone chips also are fixed free if in drivers line of sight. Dont think they will pay for cloudy windshield.

Craig,
The work was done by Auto Windsreens and I had no problems with it at all. The only thing I would say is make sure you request that the join in the seal in central whether it is top or bottom as it if you don't it will bug you every time you notice it.
Garrett,
I have a £375 excess on any repairs but any glass replacement has an excess of just £60.
