From the latest article in the "911 & Porsche World", it stated that a 993 airflow sensor unit can replace the "barn door" sensor unit in a 964 engine to improve performance. Any validity to such claim? Better yet, has any one of you done such modification?

This is more commonly known as a Maf conversion. Search the forum for the long lists of article on it. As to if it improves performance is subjective. There is no doubt that is must be less "restrictive" than the barn door but the barn door is not a restriction upto 300hp or so I am led to believe. It could also be useful for replacing worn out units. The conversion usually consists of the sensor a conversion box (the signals are not the same) and a re chip.

I had this conversion on my last 964 C2, it ran a totally standard engine apart from this mod.
It produced 285 FWHP and was very smooth and torquey.
I'd previously owned several 964 RSs all of which had been remapped and had cat bypass pipes fitted.
The 964 fitted with the 993 MAF was just as quick (if not quicker due to the big spread of torque) and had a much more linear power delivery.
It wasn't a cheap conversion though.
