Looking to get this steering wheel for my 930 project car, anyone know where I can get it? Was it a special order factory component?
Stripped out some of it already!!

I think I remember that wheel being advertised in the late 1980's in Excellence Magazine (actually it was Porsche Magazine back then). I don't know where you could get it today, but when I get home I can check the old issues to see what company made them- maybe they are still in business and have some in stock? I think it was about $400 back then....please don't get it in red- that picture is painful to look at

That steering wheel was made by Personal and if I remember rightly it was made in Italy. I used to have one fitted to my Golf GTi way back in the heady days of the 80's !!

I always knew my obsessive hoarding of useless old catalogues would pay off some day.
I have a Personal catalogue from the mid 80's, and although that wheel is not shown, I suspect it could be a customised version of one of their wheels. The Personal "Mirage" is probably the closest to it.

This is a MOMO, but with that red striped boss, it looks quite period.

I bought mine from the VW dealer at great cost - it was pictured on the front of the VW accessories catalogue of the time - which I still have I'm ashamed to admit ! It was a genuine 'VW motorsport' wheel with the VW logo on the centrepad instead of the Porsche badge. Ah, fond memories......

OK- after much looking, I finally found one of the old magazines that had what I believe to be that steering wheel advertised, however I did a quick internet search and only come up with another racing company that doesn't appear to be the same company. In the July/August 1987 issue of Porsche Magazine (now Excellence) it is listed in a full page ad on page 15. It's from a company called Alan Johnson Racing, Inc. and is listed as follows:
930S Steering Wheel. Available only at AJR. Covered in genuine leather, featuring a gold Porsche crest. Available in black, blue or brown. Fits 911/930, 1974 to 1987 (my note--> keep in mind this magazine was from 1987, so it probably fits at least up through 1989 if not later). AJR 347 859 $417, SPECIAL $298.
Alan Johnson Racing, Inc

Phone: 619-297-9070
Who knows if that area code is even the same, or if the company still exists but it can't hurt to try! I only remember the advertisement so well because when I was 17 and had my 1978 911, I was contemplating getting one of these steering wheels! Never thought I'd have any use for all of the car junk that fills my brain
Good luck finding it!

AJ-USA has a 930S replica wheel. Try this link:

Also, Porsche still makes a similar wheel used in the Euro 968CS - can ask at a dealer. Its slightly more expensive than the AJ-USA wheel but it has a little better stitching/leather quality.
I put one of the AJ wheels in a 944T several years ago, with the full porsche crest - it was a nice look compared to the standard airbag wheel.

Mine came standard with this wheel - matches the interior perfectly and with the Porsche crest on it I can't help but think it was original with the car. I've also seen it in some of the 959 pics. I'll see if I can track down some info on it...

frankvan, what happened to your ignition key hole- it's all chewed up? The round plastic cover that surrounds the key slot twists/turns right off and a new one is pretty cheap. I replaced mine just because it was getting that white haze on it that these seem to get after several years....but my old '78 always had the white haze that I hated and I never thought to try to replace the part at that time

Will do Jerry, I've stripped out the front of this one at the moment, and to be honest it's not that hard if you use the PET from the Porsche website and a HEX wratchet toolset!!
I think the 930S replica in that link fella is not the one I'm looking for it's the burgundy one in the picture above and in my red photo, McJohn any catalogues?
I was getting excited when this thread has started producing some good results, thanks everyone for their efforts so far!!
I wondered if it was a special options list thing? It seems to be on too many Porsche to be aftermarket!!

A rummage thro the McLibrary (1980's steering wheel section) reveals several MOMO catalogues, and others from Nardi, Personal, Guigiaro, Raid and Mountney, but sadly none from Italvolanti. I am however pretty sure that I have an Italvolanti boss somewhere, no idea what it fits though, as most of these Italian wheels use the same fitting, so the bosses are interchangeable.
A trawl through eBay draws up 3 Italvolanti wheels, but not the one you are looking for. If I were you I'd set up a standing eBay seach for 1980's style steering wheels, and I'm sure you'd be amazed at what comes up over time.
I have to say there were some crackers in my old MOMO catalogues. I have a MOMO Veloce 3 (long since discontinued) which I have owned and used for more than 20 years, and it is still in perfect condition, and on my 964 as I type. The current MOMO wheels are not a patch on how they used to be.
