Default PON RON and MON

I had an argument I hope I can settle. I can't find my manual so I can''t settle it on my own. The stock 964 911 C2 engine was designed for minimum 91 RON. Since the US market uses the AKI/PON system, that would equate to 88PON or pump octane. Which means the car can run 89 PON if necessary. I think all DME cars in the US can run on 89 PON if necessary.
Am I wrong?

The gas pumps in my area show the RON method.

My manual says minimum octane rating is 95 ROM and goes on to explain that 95 RON is equal to 90 CLC or AKI (which goes on to show it is the same as pump octane). A sticker inside my fuel fill cover says use minimum 91 (R+M)/2 which again is the same as pump octane where I live. I use at least 91 always.

The manual also says that if 95 RON is not available that 91 RON can be used temporarily.

Mine activates the knock sensor retard even on 93 octane (R+M)/2. I have not tried 89 octane, but it surely would reduce the performance because of being retarded all the time.

Is the knock sensor "retard" similar to a trunk monkey?

What is this retard and how do you know when it is activated?

Isn't 93 as high as we can get here in the US?

Does that mean you're engine knocks all the time?

That doesn't sound good.

I always fill up with 93 octane and throw a can of octane booster in. (I don't want to start a debate on the value of adding octane booster.) I have never had pinging of any kind. I have heard of higher octane available in some places like Sunoco stations across from a race track. They can go up to 96 octane.

You could always go with a mix of avgas and regular gas. At 100LL it will burn hot though. I used to work at an airport as a kid and used to mix it in with regular gas in the Olds I built. Cleans the fuel system too!

91 in the USA is all you need. The posts above and your manual show that 91 in the USA method of calculating is equivalent to 95 RON.

Hmmm knocking at 93 octane? Are you using Arco or something?
That does sound bad though. Have you taken it in for a check?

As for the fuel cover sticker, mine says 91 RON. It was actually this that sparked the discussion I had with my buddy, who dared me to use 89 at the next fill. My car is a euro-delivery so maybe PNA forgot to switch stickers when they brought the car to US spec. I know there were some minute differences to the car when I picked it up at Zuff vs when I got it at the dealer after it came from Zuff. Ah those were the days when euro-delivery made it CHEAPER to buy a porsche. Now you have to pay to get it euro-delivery.
