Lance,

Here are some info and numbers on your 911 Turbo 3.6.

The 3.6 Turbo was only made in model year 1994. The 3.6 Turbo motor replaced the previous 3.3 liter motor that had essentially been in use since model year 1978 (with increases in power over the years). The other two 964 based turbos were produced in 1991 and 1992 with a 3.3 liter powerplant. Your Turbo uses a motor based on the normally aspirated 964's 3.6 motor (in contrast to the 3.3 Turbos of 1991 and 1992). The 3.6 Turbo is really the last of the old school, single turbo beasts.

Compression ratio 7.5:1
355 hp @ 5500 rpms (DIN)
383 ft/lbs torque @ 4200 rpms
0-100 kph (0-62 mph) 4.6 sec (Auto, Motor & Sport test).
KE Jetronic fuel injection

Transmission is the G50/52 gearbox which remained unchanged in the '91/'92 and '94 Turbos.

Hope this helps,

Jay

Jay-

Thank you! It does indeed help - again, I'm just learning all of the specs. I learned today that there are only 466 of the '94s made - makes sense why it was so difficult for me to find one. I'm very happy with my purchase and having fun finding out more information (today has been great!).

Why didn't they produce a turbo in '93?

Thanks,

Lance

Lance,

Congratulations on your new Turbo! I too just purchased a black on black 94 3.6 Turbo back in January. I haven't been able to drive it yet due to our winter climate (which is killing me), however, I sure have enjoyed polishing it and just looking at it in the garage.

Jay did a fantastic job of summarizing some of the things that make the 94 3.6 Turbo unique. On the outside the first thing you notice on the 94 VS a 91/92 C2 Turbo are the upgraded brakes and Speedline wheels. It looks like you have some suspension modifications, do you know what you are running?

Enjoy,

JRoss

I can only speculate, but since the 911 changed so much for the model year 1990, I might guess that it took Porsche a bit longer to develop the Turbo model that was now based on the 964 chassis. Hence the 1 year skip from the 1989 Turbo (based on the 3.2 Carrera) to the 1991 model year 3.3 Turbo. The '76 to '89 Turbos really have essentially the same chassis and didn't really need to change all that much other than some increases in power in '78 and again in '86 when it was brought back to the US. I would too assume that there were quite a few more laws and regulations in effect for noise and emmissions that Porsche needed to meet in '91 and '94.

The 1994 Turbo was probably a stop gap model since even the 3.6 motor used older fuel injection technology. Keep in mind that only a few markets had 1994 964 based models. The 993 was out in the fall of 1993 in markets other than the US. The US got the 993 in the spring of 1994 (labled as a 1995 model year car). So, you could think of the 3.6 Turbo as really a 1993 car age wise. I would also bet Porsche was working harder on the 993 based Twin Turbo that was due for model year 1996 and the '94 3.6 Turbo could have been a stepping stone for Porsche on the way to the 3.6 Twin Turbo in the 993 series.

All that being said, I still think the 3.6 Turbo is an exceptional car. Raw, old school single turbo power delivery (just like we like 'em), great looks of the 964 series, and very, very rare. Nice choice Lance!

Again, this is all just speculation and I could totally be incorrect on why there are gaps in Turbo model production.

JRoss-

Congrats with your new purchase as well - I understand what you are going through. I never drive mine either. It's a very sexy car to just venture out into the garage and take a brief peak or two though. I'm ready to give her a run this summer (time will tell). I'm not sure what has been done to the suspension, I do however know it's been lowered (not sure how). I also have a nice exhaust system on the car (sounds & looks great) - not sure what brand it is. The car also has an after market stereo in it - I never listen to the radio anyway. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Jay-

Thanks for the schooling - I appreciate you taking the time to provide me some speculative background on my car. I love learning about it & feel I did the right thing by just picking it up while I could. Life is good!

Thanks again,

Lance
