I love the 964. I have a 545i for a regular car, and I cannot stand driving it any more. Really. I also have a 968, which is cool, in a different way. But, I may sell it becuase I do not have time for both Porsches. I will wait until summer to decide. And, I am most likely going to sell my 545 and buy a New Honda Civic or something more responsible to drive on a daily basis when not driving the Porsche. It seems silly to have such an expensive car when the 911 brings me so much joy on the track and the street.
I crave driving the 964. Even after all the problems, the car is just spectacular to drive. The feeling on the track is beyond explanation. And on the road it makes you feel alive while still being in total control. I am lucky, my 964 is tight as a drum with very few interior squeaks or rattles. I had some gouges in the Dash repaired by the paint shop, I hope that it is still squeak free when I get it back!
For $18,000 you are going to need to get really lucky. Perhaps a divorce or estate sale? These 964's have a tendancy to leak bad. Pre 1992 may need flywheels reaplaced. Porsche repairs are not cheap, and a 964 has a lot more covers to remove before they can work so take that into account. And, 2 sets of plugs and wires! Good luck.
I had a 1989 911, mint, absolutely perfect for $28,000. The main issues for me were the lack of proper AC and the lack of refinement on the highway. Although many people consider that lack of refinement a plus. Those cars are much easier to find in good condition and cost much less to fix. A 993 goes for a bit more than a nice 964 but are also very expensive to repair.
Anyhow, good luck and avoid the guys from Houston on Ebay. I will send the names to you buy email or private mail if you wish.
Here is a photo of my 968 taken by the previous owner. I will take more photos this summer.
