Default 964 Exhaust options - 993?

Hey guys-

I'm looking at my options here. For now, I would like to keep my heat. My questions are:

1. If the 993 gained a lot of its performance from a better exhaust system, can you put the 993 headers/exchanges on a 964?

2. What experience have you had with aftermarket exhaust (full exhaust)?

Thanks!

Happy Weekend!

Not sure if SSI makes headers/HE's for 964, but that would be my choice for that end. I bought the Fabspeed dual out and the fit and quality are 1st rate (sounds nice too!).

I think Tom W did a writeup on his results from the Dyno and found that the best option was stock headers w/ cat bypass and secondary bypass. If I remember, the test was with the Fabspeed headers. I will try to dig it up.

I have seen some threads over on Pelican about using 993 heat exchangers (HE) on 964 motors. The experts over there say the SSIs are too small for a 3.6. You have to flip the flanges on the passenger side HE to make it work. I never did get an answer on how to set it up for use with catalytic converters.

IMHO headers, (B&Bs do come with heat) a low restriction muffler, and a custom chip would be your best bet for cheap hp. I found 20 hp in my old 3.2 this way. It's my understanding that you can get at least this much from the 964. I don't think you could fit your stock cat into this, but those small race cats might work. Fabspeed has some experience with these.

SSI's are too small, I used them on one of my cars w/ 964 engine for a short time, they are ok up to ~4500 or so but strangle the engine after that.

oem 993 manifolds w/ reversed passenger side flange is a great setup, but it's a bit of a hassle to muffle them

B&B is easiest to install all around and uses the stock heat pieces, my only nit to pick is that their heat output is not the best.

SSI's start to become too small on 3.2L engines, although they can be used. They're great for up to 3.0L engines. Joel Reiser really likes the 993 header surgery, since much of the extra hp on the 993 engine was due to better exhaust. Of course, if money is not an issue, FVD offers a nice header system, with racing cats if needed, and heat!

Check out the Instant G web site - he advertises the conversion work to put a 993 exhaust on a 964.

Joel Reiser is one of the "answer-men" in the PCA Magazine Panorama, Tech Q & A Column. He is listed as a specialist in 911's from 1989 to current.

Smile complete ss exhaust system

kevin, i have a ghl motorsports complete stainless steel exhaust system for sale. the factory claims 28hp and 28 ft.# at the rear wheels. the system also has ss heater manifolds. system fits 1989-1994 c2/4 models. list is +/- $2500.00, i will accept $1350.00 plus shipping. system was used 2-3k miles, i blew a rocker arm and converted to a tt. system was on my 1991/c4. shipping by greyhound lines is very reasonable, although i have not checked on this unit. thanks, tjn/vkiller

Hi Agent

I had a full GHL system with heat and I got around 16rwhp and approx 20lb/ft torque with nothing else added....these were the figures from an independent before and after dyno here in the UK......
