is it pegged all of the time? Does it go from low or mid to pegged and stay pegged?

If so, I am with jimq... ground wire or sensor issue.

Good luck!

Actually it's only "pegged" when I stop and at an idle, otherwise it's somewhere around the 3/4 mark.
While on the subject, where on the dipstick should the oil level be? If the guage typcially reads the same level as the oil on the dipstick, does that mean the ideal level should be about half way up the indication range on the stick at idle, when hot?

Indy,

You didn't really think I would let you drive did you? ;-) By the way, it's a Tiptronic, does that mean its still a real Porsche?

" You didn't really think I would let you drive did you? "
Sure , as a fellow 964 owner why not , I would let you drive mine .

"By the way, it's a Tiptronic, does that mean its still a real Porsche?"
If its good for F1 , its good . Did you see the post about the shift on the wheel
job someone did . Tips are cool .

As others have already said, you need to drain a bit of oil. You can use a turkey baster to suck out a few ounces at a time. I've found, as someone has said previously, that the difference between "halfway" on the gauge and the needle being in the red can b e only a few ounces (gauges might vary). I've found that using the turkey baster is easier and less messy than opening the drain plug.

Obviously the dip stick is needed to check the gage every so often. Advantages of the gage over the dip stick:

1) No need to open the engine lid
2) It does not need a wipe rag
3) It won't get dirt or foreign objects into the oil
4) It won't burn you
5) It won't get oil on your hands
6) It won't drip oil in the engine compartment or on your paint
7) It won't scratch the paint if you are careless
8) It won't forget to check the oil
9) You won't forget to put it back if the phone rings while you are trying to use it
10) A gage will tell you if you start to lose oil while you are driving

Vestigial? The height of refinement I say.

Love a challenge? I'll bet the more creative types out there can come up with 10 more advantages for the gage (or the dip stick, for that matter).

11. The dipstick is probably the worse designed one on any car I ever had. Its damn near impossible to read it!

12. You can see the oil level while adding oil and stop, just right, no guessing.

"The height of refinement I say."
I'll 2nd that . Its so fine to look over and see the oil level is ok . Or that it might be time to add a jot .

Love your list Springer !!!

BUT ...

the oil gauge CAN lie/fail ... the dipstick NEVER lies/fails.

I check my oil ONCE a week ... religiously (when its not stored away for the winter months).
