it would be easy for a decent d-i-y-er or shop to modify your sills to enaable removal .
are they fibre-glass ??

you could extend them into the "door-shut" and fix under the sill covers .
you could fasten the undersides and front and back wheel-arch sections onto specialy made brackets ( like the rear bumper side pieces)
this would only leave a seam on the "sharks-fin" . clip on rubber finishing strips would fix the sika-flex problem here !!!

them armoural covering or clear vynil from a sign makers will stop the stone chip problem .

Ian,

With all the very positive comments I've had here I've pretty much decided to do as you suggest. I've got a couple of local body shops who I think are up to the task and I plan to let them have a look at it and see who can tackle the job best.

It seems that many like the appearance as it is now so it would seem ludicrous to spend more money on another body kit when this one is perceived as so attractive.

The issue of stone ship protection is a difficult one. As you can see from the pic, the area around the trailing edge of the rocker cover is where it gets most damage and the surface around the vents is anything BUT flat. I was unsure if products like Armourfend could cope with intricate curves like that?? The other option is just to get the rocker covers resprayed every now and then, as I have been doing for the past 2 years. Maybe we'll see what the body shop have to say.

Just wanted to chime in - I've seen the car in the flesh a few times now, and it is amazing. It looks remarkable and is in such good condition it could be new. re the body kit i love the one that's on there now. If you want to spend money on it screw on a supercharger!

Dave, what a story on a story I just read at your site. What a well documented "Concours Etat de Condition" by an "Evaluation de Rapport D’Expertise", you have assembled there. I am humbled by your work and dedication, and those are not just words... When you asked if a more traditional "look" would be advisable, I had no idea on the work that had already been done. By all means there’s no turning back, you must hold your course. I only gave my direction to take which pretty much symbolizes how I think... A steadfast conservative and a boring one at that!!.. I read Ian’s remedy, sounds like a man that not only knows his stuff but even knows "Sika-flex"... (Maybe he also has caulked and sealed teak decks before)...

I would go for the Strosek Dial Wheels in shiny chrome, the look fantastic, and also I'd go for the Strosek light conversion and rear deck lid.

That would look awesome, a right Yellow Peril!!

i once had an old gerrard deck , that was teak . but the only use i have ever had for "sticky-flex" is automotive

how is the line on the sharks fin ?
if my plan works (wont get to see my car 'til tommorow to see if i'm talking sense ) the only part that will actually meet the bodywork is around the sharks fin . i suspect fit to panel will not be great , so maybe expect a bit of extra work here ............................... BUT , THE GOOD NEWS IS .....................

i've been thinking a bit more ,

and you could use a section of GENUINE PORSCHE 964 rubber strip like our cars have to cover the sill to body joint

Ian,

There IS no line around the shark fin - because the sill and shark fin are all one piece. I agree about the rubber strip though. That's what I had in mind to do. I've got to get the wing/scuttle seals replaced as well (the painter painted over the originals). I'm going to try to get all this done before May and I promise I'll let you know how it goes.

what i mean is ............

at the moment you have a line where the complete sill cover/fin meets the body .
if the sill is "blended" into the door shut , you will lose that line .
apart from the area i'm calling a "sharks fin" .

why no fixed tail ??

Ian,

I see what you mean. Currently there is a line along the length of the sill, continuing across the top of the shark fin. At present that line is emphasised by a black line of adhesive (like grouting) but I would prefer your earlier suggestion of using the original rubber strip.

No fixed tail because (a) there wasn't one fitted when I bought the car and (b) I prefer it without. I preferred the more subtle image as with the Celebration model with the wide body but with the electric spoiler. Just personal taste I guess.
