Question Fire in the Hold - 2

Hi all again,
Thank you all for the support and advise. The Blower Resistor in question was found although in bad shape. We can't tell if its NEW or OLD version as the base plate is missing which includes the part number. Does anyone have a photo of what the NEW blower resistor looks like ?

The other strange thing was the car was dead COLD and was running for about 5 minutes in total before the fire was seen and arrested. Any help greatly appreciated. The way the fire melted the engine lid grille would indicate a blower resistor fire.
Cheers, Tinwan

i was surprised how many 964's stacked at douglas-valley had fire damage to that side of the engine bay ..........................

i spoke to somebody a while ago , might have been simon at porschapart or robin at 9meister . i was told to watch for damaged wires at the "quick-release" points ( the ones above the petrol pipes , that you remove-refit everytime the engine is dropped ) and the main power supply to the engine (on the other side of the bay) as this is clipped to the chassis of the car and can sometimes break its insulation , thus shorting to earth . i wrapped mine with lots of heat-proof insulating tape while my engine was out .

That's exactly what I was just thinking... I've had that thing out of the car a dozen times and just figured it was some sensor. Didn't know it could be so wreckless. Mine looks a bit old too so I'm going to see if it's the old one or not. I'll buy the new version if I have the old one now.

And a fire extinguisher too (Like I've been meaning to get for a while)

Sorry to see this damage!

Looking at that engine makes me feel sick. I feel very bad for the owner.

I can't even imagine the parts list for the motor alone:

Alternator Shroud,Alternator,Distributor Caps, rotors, plug wires, engine harness, blower, blower tubing, injectors, fuel piping, Complete motor rebuild, replace engine tin, resistor, intake etc etc etc. The car has to be totalled. Even in used parts I could buy another porsche for less.

Exclamation Fire in the Hold 3

Hi all,
They will fix the car, he really loves it and will painfully restore it although might need help source some parts most likely in the US. The engine cranks over and the throttle body & filter were OK so nothing was sucked into the engine, it was running normally and it was swtched off when fire was discovered. The fire was put out in 30 seconds although what a mess and the damage look really bad. Just imagine if someone was in the back seat and in fact there was going to be and they decided not to go. The mystery remains- this was a dead cold engine. Does anyone know where you can pick up a Carrera Cup Blower Motor by-pass tube, Ive seen a nice Carbon fibre one somewhere.

If it was a recall I would think it would be replaced for free by the dealer. I looked at mine and it does not have any part number on it but since my car had all recalls done it should be the new version.

Anyone know the value of the resistor ?

I think I'll be replacing mine with a 'HS' style bolted to the chassis!

More than likely his rear blower motor was seized or binding and that overloaded the resistor making it hot enough to ignite the plastic. Its too bad that the consumer protection laws are non-existant in China otherwise Porsche could have been forced to pay for the repair. The transportation department in Hong Kong pretty much says you're on your own when it comes to worldwide safety recalls (based on what little info I could find).

Exclamation Fire in the Hold 4

Hi Jason,
Your right, it goes for many laws covering many industries categories, being a lawyer here is a very profitable business.. The fire department was present and so was the police and they have presented their reports. They claimed the (engine bay) fuse box was the cause of the fire as they assume of course. Now my friend has trouble with the insurance company as there trying to get out of paying the claim (again this business is not strictly regulated)

How could they say the engine fuse box was the cause of the fire??

While the fuxe/relay box is slightly melted, it does not look burned like all the stuff to the right of the fuse box.

Exclamation Fire in the Hold 5

Hi Marc,
The fire service & police here don't really care, they want something on a report and that is what they said. It happens a lot up here, there are many cars catch fire due to shoddy repairs although not in the C4 as had been given a major service by the Porsche dearler only 6 months ago and had only been driven 2000 klms. We think the fan seized or the Fan blower resistor caused the fire. Cheers, Tinwan
