Default Bilstein HDs and revalving

I talked to someone at Bilstein who said the HDs are designed for stock spring height, not lowered springs - however lots of folks here seem to use the HDs with a lowered setup and I'm wondering how many revalved them. Any additional comments welcome.

yeah i revalved mine with the H&R springs. i didn't try them with stock valving. i just assumed they couldn't be right with the new spring rates that are way higher than stock. the front end still felt bouncy so i revalved them again. the revalving was only the rebound and it should be increased proportional to the spring rate increase. i chose the bilsteins because they are easily revalved and i just had an impression that their high speed compression valving is not harsh.

the result is pretty good but i am going to search for a set of eibach front springs to try and tame down the front end. the eibachs supposidy have a progressive rate in the front that I think will balance the feel of the car a little better than the H&Rs....soften up the front a little....so i'll end up with H&Rs on the back and eibachs on the front

I bought my '91 C4 July of 2005 and it was already lowered when I got it. I'm told it has Eibachs. Unfortunately I only have "test drive" experience with Porches before this car so I can't give you any educated feedback on the ride.

I can tell you that I purchased the car from a part time broker (retired and now brokering cars). He said he'd been driving Porches for 20 yrs, or so. He told me that he really liked my car a great deal. Said that he rarely drove client's cars, but that he put 600 miles on my car! That, he said, was how much he liked it. It belonged to a close friend of his so I guess he felt okay driving it.

Any way, thought you might like the feedback on the Eibachs.

Cheers,
Dave

I had the HDs with RSA/Turbo H&R lowering springs and they were, IMO, a good match. I've also drove cars with the same setup but revalved and the differences were minimal. My 964 was aligned and lowered to Eruo RS specs and was my daily commuter and weekend track car.

Started with the stock springs, but did NOT like the ride height. Just lowered it last week with a set of H&R's and like the new look! See pix on the thread from last week.

Its a very good question. I have Eibach's w/HDs. I think the front end is still pretty bouncy. I didn't think to have them revalved as I was told by several people that they are fine the way they come.

But yes, rebound could be tweaked to calm the bounce. To that end, I drove a stock GT2 and the front end was bouncing all over the place...on a rough road at speed it was simply not that much fun!

I used M030 shocks when I lowered and seems to ride real nice. Dont notice a bouncy ride at all.

While we are on the topic, I have been shopping for Bilstein shocks while waiting for my backordered H&R springs to ship. Performance Products seems to have the best price but I don't see an "HD" or "Sport" designation on their web page OR their print catalog... my impression is that they come in sport or HD versions. Is it safe to assume that these are HD? Anyone bought theirs via Perf. Products?
Tried contacting them but have not heard back yet.
Thanks!

I used 965 H&Rs without modifying the Bilstein (VE3-5277/5278) fronts. With the collars set at the lowest setting (approx, after corner balancing), the front fenders measured @25.5" on my RSA and the springs did not come unseated when the car was up on jack stands. The folks at Bilstein said that as described, this was "within normal range" for their strut.

I recently switched to RS springs which are significantly shorter and sent the front struts to Bilstein to be shortened and revalved (259/84) to match the specs of V36-0155/0156 (RS struts). Btw, this is one way you can retain the stock steel/rubber strut tops with RS spec suspension for those interested in a slightly softer than full RS set-up.

It might be useful to note that the standard 964 Bilstein front strut is valved at 223/84 and not 332/84 as I've seen a few times elsewhere on the board. I too didn't understand why the standard HD shock would have higher rebound #s than the RS strut. Thanks to the Bilstein folks for clearing that up.

Hope this helps.

How much does Bilstein charge for the shortening and revalve?

Thanks Jeremy, that's a better deal than I was looking at and they are clear on what version of Bilstein they are selling.

i'm pretty sure my fronts are valved at 300/102 with the H&R springs. it's still a little bouncy. with the eibachs, that valving may be better because the eibachs are more progressive than the H&Rs i think

Default shortening & revalve price

Approx. $75 for the re-valve, and $35 for the machine work to shorten each strut. $246 total, incl. $17 tax and $9 shipping.

Cheers
Roland
