I prefer 92 and later due to some refinements.
Some updates in later model, included 'sealing rings' to the cylinder bases to prevent oil leaks which can plague some 89-91 cars. C2 models got rid of twin piston rear calipers for the larger 4 piston part from the C4 model. A more efficient plastic intake manifold was added. Also distributor venting, but most earlier 964s probably were updated by now. 17" Cup style wheels were available. The most notable exterior difference between early and late 964s are re-styled rear view mirrors which will look familiar to any 993.

New 964 Owner
I just bought my first Porsche ever. It is a 1993 Porsche C4 with 52K miles on it. I am glad you guys posted all this Info, it looks like I got a good deal on it and paid close to $ 18,000.00. It has been standing for the last 4 years though. So to start the engine for the first time after obviously adding new fuel and battery, do I have to look out for anything else?

I would Drain the fuel tank change the filters and replace the oil. Then I would pull the DME and fuel pump fuse. Crank the car until you see the oil pressure rise and then replace the DME and fuse keep your fingers crossed and see if she turns over.
Trying to dilute old fuel is a risk and if there are any clogs or issues could lead to a lean condition and blown engine. I have seen it happen. best luck and post some pictures when you have the time.

as these cars age, and many have been used as daily drivers, how big of a deal do you see "minor" accident work? I've found a 94 C2 manual hardtop with about 70k/mi for upper 40s. Before a PPI, the owner has told me that the rear bumper cover was replaced last year from an accident. clearly if there is metal work this is a different thing, but if it is truely just the bumper skin and the bolt on pieces underneath, how much does this really matter?
I know I'm buying a driver, but just trying to understand perception and how it relates to price.

I wonder whether you can request that a PPI takes at least the rear bumper off to check for that?

good point. the work was done in the last 12 months. I could probably ask for the receipts of the repairs to understand what was or wasn't replaced. It doesn't show up on the carfax which suggests its minor as insurance wasn't leveraged or a police report wasn't filed...

How high do you think this crazy 964 / air cooled Carrera market will go? I just spoke with one of the local lux car dealers and he said that he has NONE in stock and at least 5 people asking for one per week...

Essentially the right cars no matter what model will go through the roof. The guess is what makes a car the "right" car. It differs considerably for a 964 vs a 993. Right now the 964 started with very low production numbers at least in the US compared to other air cooled models. The low production numbers of the 964 was also diminished by the car being the black sheep for so long and many were neglected turned into track cars and scrapped out. Now we have everyone using them to build singers, outlaws and other back date tributes. This leaves a very small number of original cars vs a myriad of 993's. Do a search there are at least 20 993's for every 964 for sale and most of the 964's are junk vs the 993's which are pristine in comparison. So a clean pristine 964 with low mileage has the potential of becoming a valuable commodity especially the 92-94 MY cars.
