Replacing seals on the sills...anyone have advice?
I have searched the forums without success for some DIY advice on replacing the rubber seals that run between the sill panels and the bodywork below the doors all the way to the back of the car. Not sure what these things are called?? Mine have shrunk and leaves unsightly gaps where the sill meets the rear shark fin shaped thing. My car is a '93 C4 turbo look. My questions are:
1. Can you purchase these seals seperately?
2. How hard is it to remove the panels and what holds it in place (clips?/glue?)
3. The (black) bottom of these sills as well as the bottom of the "shark fin" is badly sandblasted and I want to repaint it black. Should I use black underbody sealent of the rubbery type or just normal paint, any suggestions?
4. I guess the last question, is this a DIY or best left to experts?
Advice will be much appreciated!
Thanks guys
Frans

1. Porsche main dealer, probably cost you a 'pony' all in.
2. Not hard in theory, but as usual, rusted-in fixings increase the frustration-factor. Maybe not an issue in Oz. You could maybe replace the rubber strip without removing the sill covers, but it might be tricky to get it seated right.
To remove:The sharkfin is held in to the wing by two 10mm plastic nuts on metal captive bolts, plus 1 or 2 phillips screws underneath. The former benefits greatly from a ratchet spanner. The captive bolts sometimes break.
Once the sharkfin is off, work along the sill trim. From memory there are phillips screws underneath, plus some more 10mm plastic nuts at intervals underneath. The upper edge is held in place by pop-in plugs, which come out with a CLACK (or a 'snap' if you're unlucky), that is apart from the one an inch before the front wheelarch. This is a bolt. DON'T PULL ON IT! You need to loosen the lower part of the wheelarch liner to get your spanner in to it.
I would remove both sills before you order the strips - Porsche supply spares for all the fittings, you'll prob need some spares. Occasionally you may have to araldite where the captive bolt attaches to the trim - it worked fine with mine.
The rubber strip presses into a groove on the back of the trim, and then you can tighten it in to the body. I trimmed my strip to size. Not sure if you're meant to.
So - no magic, just fiddly.
My car is grey, the trims are all grey. But I wouuld use that black 'orange peel' effect stuff in a can, I guess. John M had his bodyshop do it.

Replacing the rocker sill trim is more fiddly than anything else. You might want to have some expoxy on hand as the clips are easy to break.
Here is a shot of the rocker panel off one side of the car - bolt holes and clips exposed.

and for the "shark-fin" cover strips the numbers are:

Hawk,
Have you tried that seal from Rennspd? The one shown on that page doesn't look like the right seal for the 964, the profile is wrong. The 964 seals look almost like a windshield wiper blade and shouldn't cost anymore than $20USD, I paid $6.13USD for sharkfin seals/trim last fall.

My question is not related to the sill rubber (although I need to replace mine) but has anyone had the brackets (see photo above) supporting the oil pipes come loose and had to replace them? I get a clunking noise from that area when the thermostat opens and guess there is problem with a bracket when the pipes warm up.

Frans,
I replaced all my seals a few months ago, it's not difficult. The parts are not expensive and I replaced all of the clips and receivers when I did it. It fits much better now and looks great. The seals shrink over time, mine were original so over 16 years mine needed them. PM me if you need pictures or more info.
