Tx Snowbird, some years ago I had a great time with a Whaler, just South of Ft Myers, great time till we got completely lost. No cell phones back then. The small boat belonged to a guy setting-up smoke pots for mosquito control, he was kind enough to lead us back to our point of departure. Without him I would probably still be cruising around there

When the thing is heeled all the way over and the freeboard looks more like a keel , you will be thinking fondly of the canal .

My fathers father died at sea , my great uncle went down with the titanic . My uncle had his own boats in the navy . I think I've got nuff saltwater in my veins that , no need an earring .

Ever read Slocum ?
I think the first emotion experienced when taking a houseboat outside the intercoastal would be "fear". maybe a bit of "trembling" added.

Since posting & reading this, I have helped bring that same 50' Stephens from Gran Canaria to Trinidad, played with it in the San Blas, brung someone else's boat through the Canal, survived the Dreaded Gulf of Tehauntepec, and will soon be messing about in the Sea of Cortez with it. And I got the earring anyway. Cannot **** to wind'ard.

Read Slocum? Of course. The man had bigger cojones than most.
