I noticed in the wiring diagram that Canada has daytime lights. Which lights are automatically on when you start the car and I presume they go off automatically. I might change mine as I have left my lights on before. thanks

The foglamps are used as DRLs. I think the US cars have all the bits needed except the appropriate relay in the front fusebox, IIRC. Add relay and voila, DRLs. They also don't provoke the drivers ahead of you the way headlamps can...

Steve,

All N.A. 964's are wired for DRL's.

Just add a relay (part No. 431.951.253.G) in Socket # R63 and you'll have DRL's too.

I can't believe that the U.S. doesn't have DRL laws yet...

Geoff,

I am interested in adding DRL to my 89 C4. Can you provide any more details or instructions on this project? Any help would be much appreciated!

Regards,
PC

Marc ,
My Factory manuals dont show DRL wiring for any 89 C4 . The relay/wiring appear on the 1990 diagrams.

ped964,

Its real easy to add DRL if you are OK with electrics .

You will need a 20 amp , 12 volt coil , relay with de-energised open contacts
( normal auxillary relay ) and a 1 amp ( min ) 100v diode ( Radio Shack/The Source ? )

The relay load contacts are wired to Central electric D41 ( white/yellow - fog light feed ) and F21 ( Violet - Fog supply ) .

The relay coil is wired to K25 ( White/black-Lights supply ) and through the diode from E24 ( Green/black- Fuel pump supply ) .The anode of the diode goes to E24 and the cathode to the relay coil.

This is a replica of the 1990 on Porsche wiring. The way it works is that as soon as the motor fires E24 goes to battery volts .Relay coil current flows through the diode - relay coil and on through the headlights to ground. Relay closes and powers the Fog lights.
If you turn the lights on K25 also goes to battery volts so there is no voltage difference across the relay coil and the relay turns off.

Be sure to use cable able to handle 20 amps for the D41/F21 wires.
The other two are only carrying relay coil current , say 0.5 amp .

To access the central electric cables you need to pull the box up and turn it over. Take the CE top off .Unscrew the **** in the far LH corner.Remove the triangular plate in the side next to you ( 3 ,8mm headed srews ). You can then lift the central electric box up and turn it over for work to begin.
The letter codes are moulded in the box along the edge.Wire colours then make it easy.

I had a relay with 1/4 inch blades so used 1/4 " connectors .I did not cut any loom wires. Just cut through the insulation and soldered the new wires in .
I punched out the R63 hole in the CE box and pushed the new relay in the square hole with the new wire down with the rest .

Hope this helps. Good luck

Geoff
