Value of RSA Whale Tail / Rear Spoiler
Gang, I've had a RSA tail (it came off a 40k mile car and is painted with fresh Glasurit guards red) in my parts stash for years now just incase I ever got a 964. I'm sure my wife would love it if I did as my 951 hasn't moved under its on power in 2 years.
I don't see my self in a 911 in the next 12 to 24 months. So I figure it's time to flip it. If any of you have bought one recently please let me know how much you paid. I need more money to poor down the water cooled bottomless pit.
Thanks,

There's one on www.rsamerica.net with asking price of $850, but it has been listed there for at least 6 months...
Is this just the whale tail, or an entire engine cover with the tail ?

When I bought one about a 1.5 years ago, I was amazed at how much sellers thought they were worth. I suggest you look at what Getty Design or MA Shaw want for a new one before you decide the price of yours. To get a good match, it will likely need to be painted even if it goes onto the same color car. I ended up buying a new deck lid and tail for less that what people wanted for a used tail.

From what I have seen from both those companies, and others, is that they have a one-piece unit in the same overall shape, versus if somebody is looking for factory-like RS America which was two-pieces - a painted section and a large thick black rubber edging.

Two years ago, for an entire Grand Prix white RSA decklid and tail I paid $1000 including shipping from the east to west coast.
The Grand Prix white color matched my car perfectly without painting so that was worth some premium to me.
If the factory adaptor brackets are included that would be worth something since they cost over 200 bucks at the dealer since they are part of the hinge. They are relatively easy to make though.

I just picked up a complete tail and deck lid with the factory adaptors and badging (Still in bag, never installed) It is in GP white, matches my car perfectly,so no painting for me.
The big deal on the RSA tails is that it came from the factory with no rear wiper plug making it a bit more rare than most aftermarket tails and earlier Carrera tails. The lid was also from an older parts bin and requires adaptors to fit the C2. Other than that it is very simillar. I am building a RSA clone and want the parts to be factory exact.
I was thrilled to pick mine up for $850.00
I saw one on ebay went for over $500.00 for just the tail, no lid in black.

I too wanted the factory parts and that was worth something to me.
Something to keep in mind with the factory tail though is that it is HEAVY.
My RSA tail weighs 9.5 pounds more than the factory electric C2 tail on my scale.
I think that the non-factory tails without the rubber surround are much lighter, so if track use is your bag I would go that route....

Last night I picked up an OEM wing from a 89 Carrera painted the original Prix White matching my car for $650 lid included. Hope this wing will help a little at the Califonia Speedway turn 1 and 2 and Willow Springs Turn 8 and 9.
Now I am in the process of fabricating adaptors plates out of alumium that way I an easly put the C2 lid back on the car.
Does anyone have any pictures of their adaptor plates or mesurments before I reinvent the wheel?

I think the MA Shaw lid and wing weighs less than the stock moveable parts. I honestly don't think the RSA wing helps all that much, but the faster the turn, the more it's likely to help. Out here, turn 8 at Thunderhill is a good comparitor. I take it at about 95. I don't see that I'm going all that much faster than guys with the stock moveable tail (but mainly compared to 993's as I can't recall running with a stock 964).
FWIW, my MA Shaw RSA tail and lid are for sale. $600 plus shipping. Never painted. I'm not sure if I need the adapters for the new tail or not, but you can get adapters from MA Shaw directly. I'm looking for real downforce to help in the fast turns and have switched to a 3.8 tail with an extended 60" wing.
