Default HID Xenon upgrades

Anyone done this?

The reason I ask is it's crossed my mind once or twice, and I have also enquired about my Audi.

The Audi specialist has discontinued these as they were not reliable enough, funny as they are the same types as you can fit to the 964. That is to say the high beam/low beam is achieved by a servo reflector moving, and this was the issue that caused the specialist to withdraw the kits....

So has anyone had this experience with theirs on the 964???

Hi Kevin!

I think Phil Raby fitted them to his old C4. It was featured in 911&PW.

May be worth dropping him a line.

A few people here have done this:

I'd be interested in looking in to this too.

I did HIDs on my 993 and couldn't believe the difference. They are truely wonderful. I did it about a year ago and have had no problems or regrets. I got mine from the UK, HID-online.com I think so it should be easy for you .

Hi all,
These conversions are not really suited to H4 lighting systems. H4 needs to focus the beam through the glass lens pattern. If the bulb rating is to strong, the light is sending through the glass lens in all directions, which is very dangerous to you and on coming drivers. As I remember, the 2-x ballast in Phil Raby's report was installed inside the mudguards under the plastic liners. This is also very dangerous as water coming in contact with this equipment could potentially send high voltage right through the car and kill the entire electrical system.

The correct way as I see it, is buy 356 (clear lens) and install separate projectors units for high & low beam and place the new ballast inside the trunk and out of harms way, as they are very compact size now. I will make some when I get around to building my own on day, I believe a guy in Germany makes them although they're quite expensive.
Cheers, Mark

I would love to have HID's on my 964. A Porsche with the classic lines, yet an updated lens kit and great lighting technology--that would be a sweet combination! My old A6 and my current Evolution both have HID's and wow, what a difference it makes.

Also... Warmfuzzies, what kind of Audi do you have?

Is it a motorized high/low beam or how does it work?

I found these from eBay (no affiliation, etc.) that look promising too.

I have a 94 80TDI .......................currently with 196k on the clock, and still going strong.......the headlamps are quite bad really so...that's why I was looking at the HID's.

Talking Looking good

Guys,

You may or may not, I don't know...... <insert coment> be interested on my latest find.

I'm going to be fitting some H4 HIDs with Xenon low beam and Halogen high beam, this should alleviate the moving parts problem some, note some have experienced. The kit is H4 but will be going in my old girl, the Audi first....then the 964.
When I get the kits to fit I'm expected to do short write up for the supplier, if they are any good I'll be sure to drop by and give you all a shout.

Just thought you may be interested.

kevin.

I've got a Canadian source for this kit. He sells them for $380 Canadian and is happy to sell to the U.K. Let me know if you want his contact info. Picture attached:

Alon,

Are those both high/low beam or just low beam and do they replace H4's or H5's?

In the case of a 993, they are an H1 kit that can be used for either high or low beam. I don't know enough about the 964 based headlight to know if it uses a single bulb for both high and low beams or not but I doubt it. As for other types (H4, H5, etc.), he can supply those too. Go directly to his website (Andrew) at http://www.meengreen.com/HID.html and let him know that I referred you from Rennlist.

That seems to be the big problem with these kits. We need -
1. A bolt in kit that is a direct replacement for H5's
2. High AND Low beams

I don't mind paying a premium for Xenon lights because i've had them on other cars and they are fantastic..

I'm not sure that I follow you. Are the 964 headlights using a single bulb for both high and low beams? What I liked most about this kit is that it uses seperate ballasts and ignitors just like the OEM Porsche kits in the 993s and like the Catz kits that many on the 993 board have used in their cars. For the 993, the two piece kit offers the flexibility of installing the ballast in the trunk area and then installing the ignitors inside the headlight housings thus enabling the use of the standard plug and play wire connectors at the back of the headlight assemblies.

Does anyone have a parts (PET) view of the 964 headlight assembly so I can get a better understanding of its design?
