I found this kit on eBay and thought it might be a good solution.

He has kits for both H4's and H5's and the kit also does both high and low beam - if you watch the movie in the listing you can see it actually moves to re-aim the light for each. I'm not sure about longevity with the unit but it is cheap enough that I am tempted to try it.

p.s. No affliation, etc.

I'd be skeptical about any device that re-aims the beam so that it switches from high to low beam. Porsche does that on 996/986/997/987 and they fail fairly often and that's an OEM quality kit. If the 964 headlight lens has two distinct areas of light pattern refractors, you're best continuing to light through them instead of trying to make one of them do both high and low beam. In the 993 headlight, there are clearly 2 distinct refractor/reflector areas that light is emmitted through so certain lighting patterns are created.

Marc - where do you see the H5 kit there? I see only H4, and lower down they say they can't convert 9004 and 9007 lights, whatever they are..

Alon,
Thats the issue, mechanical switching has problems long term, and my aims to seek other avenues. H4 is hi/lo in the same lamp, the 993 has seperate lamps......
I've asked a question refernce his H4 kits and await a response.

AFAIK, H5's are 9004 and use a single bulb for both high and low which is the "technical limitations" he refers to for hi/low beams with H5's.

You are right, the listing I posted did not have hi/low for H5's -- I've never seen a hi/low kit for H5's which is why I plan to upgrade to H4's so I could get both high and low beam once I switch to HID's.

His other listing here (which is cheaper) is for low beam only and work with 9004's (ie. H5's).

Hi
How deep are these lamp units? Do you think this kit will require you to drill out the back of the headlamp bowl on a 964?

I see now. The 964 uses a dual filament bulb for hig and low beams? Well at least you know that the refractor lens isn't high and low beam specific. I see why HIDs would be a challenge then. What is the answer to this dilema?

Alon,

I guess I'll find out when I'm asked to test the new HID low /Halogen hi beam units.......
Not sure of timescales, but if/when I'll feedback to the group on how worthwhile they are as an upgrade.

Kevin - if you install them, take a few pictures as you go. I'd love to see how easy (or hard) they are to install.

Dear all.........

sorry guys no update yet, the bulbs/lamps are still under trial, I've seen pictures of them, which is good, they are a HID Halogen hybrid, with no moving parts, are only 1cm longer than standard so should be able to fit ii the 964 wing without having to drill the back of the headlamp cowling, when I get more info I'll be sure to let you know, I just haven't got anything to report yet.......

Hi guys,

I installed an HID kit from Niemeister about a year ago and still marvel at the change. The system changes between low and high beam by means of an electromagnetic swivel, and so far I have had no problems.

Although the system is a huge improvement over the original illumination, the high beam is not as good as on my previous car, a VW Golf with factory-fitted HID. I assume this is a result of retro-fitting HIDs to a lamp prepared for another system.

Take care,

Jens

For what it's worth, I don't think I've ever used the high beams in my 993 since the switch to HID low beams over a year ago. The low's provide almost as much light as the high's.
