The chip in an ECU holds the operating system and look- up tables( maps ).
The operating system is written for the hardware platform in the ECU.
Over the life of the 964, the ECU hardware has changed and so a chip from one platform will not work in another.
A quick disassembly of code will reveal all !!
The RS ECU will run a standard 964 as the motor sensors ,harness etc are the same.Pretty pointless, as 260/265 bhp is the end result- less than remapping the ECU on the car.
The RS CUP cars ran a modified late 964 ECU .
Golden rule,to avoid a no start, is to make sure that any modified chip is a version of what the ECU has standard.

"The chip in an ECU holds the operating system and look- up tables( maps."
There's NO O.S. used in the Porsche/Bosch ECMs. The ECM is just a very simple
micropocessor driven embedded controller.
"Over the life of the 964, the ECU hardware has changed and so a chip from one platform will not work in another."
Not true! Porsche has NEVER changed the standard production street 964 ECM,
i.e. not on this planet.
"A quick disassembly of code will reveal all !!"
It doesn't reveal any real significant changes from '89 to '95.
"Golden rule,to avoid a no start, is to make sure that any modified chip is a version of what the ECU has standard."
Again not true! All standard '89 -'95 street 964s ECMs are the same electronically.
Special race versions DON"T fall into the standard 964 class.

Lorenfb,
I am quite happy with what I said. This is not based on a quick look but 20 years of involvement with Porsche ECUs.
All the best
Geoff

Could you please elaborate on the fuel quality switch on the 1990 ecu's? Where do I look for it, and what are the settings it should have for different fuel octanes?
Thanks in advance,
