Default 964 Oil Cooler Fan - Ballast Resistor

Recently got a 93 Carrera 2 Cab and the previous owner never replaced the oil cooler ballast resister which was broken about a year ago. I have not noticed any high temperatures readings at low speeds and was wondering how "urgent" I need to replace this is. I know it is a low cost issue while at the same time it is something that is "speed limiting". Thoughts??

Cool

It will affect when and if the fan comes on... oil is the blood of our cars. Best to address the problem as soon as possible. Also check the fan relay. As a preventive measure I replaced the Fan Relay the day I did the resistor. The fan stayed on once and I had to remove and reinsert the relay to get it to turn off so I made sure I replaced both when tackling this...

humm I just noticed... second post. Welcome to Rennlist!!!!

There is more info on the ballast resistor and temperature sensor in this thread here too.

Question

ok... is this related to the Ceramic resistor that goes in the front oil cooler or the Ballast Resistor in the fan (engine bay)???

This is the Ceramic Resistor that controls when the front mounted fan turns on to cool down the oil cooler:

Good question - I assumed it was ballast resistor for the engine fan but re-reading the first post perhaps not....

Thanks everyone. Anyway, it is the ballast resistor for the oil cooler fan. Heard i wasa common problem in the 964 so..... Bottom line: Sounds like I should get it done. Part is about 25 bucks and probably 20 minutes to get it replaced depending how "ugly" it is in there as I have not really had to explore the area yet.

See also http://p-car.com/diy/fan/ for a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for the oil cooler (and A/C resistor), and as a supplement to the thread posted above.

You may already know of Robin's site, but if not, browse around for tons of more great DIY resources.

Edit: Forgot to also credit Randall G. for the great write up.

Have fun with your projects.
