Post Pictures of the fabled 911 factory hardtop

This factory 911 Turbo slantnose cab (with factory removable hardtop) is being offered by Sovereign Imports:

The listing on their website seems to indicate that the hardtop was a $10,000 option.

Is the hard top a metallic part ?

I'm intersted if it is a structural element, an improvement for the chassis' stiffness (cabrio are weak) or if this hard top is only a better protection from atmospheric agents.

Just curious; i'll never buy an hard top for that price!

...and I assume that you need to remove the rear wiper(!) arm when the hardtop is removed?

I have seen pictures of the hard top for the 964. It is shown in my copy of the factory's magazine from 1992. I also saw one for sale by someone in Europe. It was originaly a very expensive option, which explains why it is so rare. If i remember correctly, the seller that had one last year was trying to get less than $2,000 for it, and somewhere i heard a $12,000 figure for it new with the car. The factory recomended that it be factory installed the first time due to how complicated it was. I will scan a picture from the magazine when I get home.

The option was EXC 155. The price was approximately DM 11,000 in the early 1990's. The top was metal. Additionally, one very special top was made with an electric sunroof and sunroof drainage system, a heated rear window and a full leather headliner.

As I recall the hardtop option for 1987 was about $6,000 - $7,000. I don't believe that was a sunroof top, which would understandably increase the cost of the part.

The 930S pictured in Mac's post looks like an '87. The top does not appear to have a sunroof, BTW.

The top pictured above was, to the best of my knowledge, the only one made with an electric sunroof.

That is probably the most complicated and impressive hard top I've ever seen!

Robert,

Do you have the car. Is the same one featured in 911 Porsche World Jan/Feb 1995.

Same color w sunroof hard top.

What a car!

"unique RSR-powered America GS 3.8 Roadster... built by Porsche's Customer Services Deparment"

"the project involved more that 75 designers, engineers and decision makers"

Could it be???

Hi Robert

I resume you would have to remove the soft top to fit the hard top ????. Would this not be a difficult task.

Removing the cabriolet top is not difficult. Does, however, take approximately 30 minutes.

Question

Where is Sovereign Imports located? I am looking for a 930 or 930s in a Targa or Rag top. Do you know what they are asking? Thanks.
