Default Stripped headlamp screw...

While trying to switch my headlamps to the Silverstars, I managed to get one light switched and in place-brilliant white! Then...I stripped the head of the first screw I tried to remove on the passenger side lens housing. The phillips recess just cammed right out as I tried to loosen the screw.

Any suggestions how to remove the screw? I could drill it out, but then how would I replace the female threads?

Pelican Parts

H4 Euro Headlight Screw, Outer (1974-86), C-631-132-00 (OEM: 911-631-132-00) $0.80
H4 Euro Headlight Screw, Inner (1974-86), C-631-033-00 (OEM: 911-631-033-00) $4.95 -- fits inside outer screw

I think your gonna have to drill.

Marc, thanks for the help, but I didn't strip the headlamp ring screw (trim piece). I stripped one of the four screws that hold the whole headlamp in place.

Can you Dremel a slot in the screw head and use a flat-blade screwdriver?

I gave that some thought, but I can't get perpendicular access. I plan to try and drill several shallow holes in a line-for a flat/regular screw driver. Worst case scenario, I'll drill out the head, remove the other screws and then try to remove what is left of the screw once I have better access.

If I can get the screw out (male threads) without destroying the female threads, I might be able to use a thread-forming or thread-cutting screw to crudly retap the threads. After all, how often will I replace the bulbs (famous last words).

Bates,

Did exact same thing saturday as my silverstar went bad as well. Phillips rounded out as the metal seemed permenently bonded to the housing, then I broke off two screw heads too.

Out came the drill.

In went 4 new self tapping metal screws with loctite.

Be careful around the lense and go slow and steady with the drill. No dremel tool will get you close enough. You can knick the plastic housing holding the lense, but break the lense and it is 150.00, plus 4.95 for the seal.

Pelican parts has a decent price on the lense in case it breaks. Good luck.

Thanks Wilson. What size screws did you use?
Jason Andreas provided me this link. http://www.mytoolstore.com/hanson/extractr.html
Seemed like a good product to have, so I ordered...don't know if I'll be able to wait for them to arrive before I break out the drill.
