Lightbulb risk management: beefing up the rear engine cross bar for use with stiffer mounts

It has been mentioned that it helps to reinforce the ends of engine cross bar to minimize the chance of fracture when stiffer mounts are used... so here's my attempt to reinforce the cross-bar.

Think it will do the trick?!

Why stop there? You should seam weld your whole car!

Looks like a good idea! Is your rengine out for rebuild? Looks like you are getting all these things done with a clutch change?

Engine's out for a clutch change and overall cleanup - it was a filthy engine due to prior oil leaks all over the place. I also couldn't help but do the valves, change the plugs...

Quick question for the Rennlist braintrust...I replaced my engine mounts with the Wevo mounts last week due to the left stock engine mount blowing it's oil all over the place upon jacking the rear up. After I pulled the stock mounts out I noticed that the engine carrier is bent at the end where the motor mount stud comes through. The passenger side is bent more than the driver's side. They're not as bad as some of the examples I saw when I searched the Rennlist archives, but it is very noticeable. I didn't see any evidence of cracking, however I suspect the Wevos will put more of a strain on the carrier. The question is, can the carrier be removed without dropping the engine? I would feel better getting it straightened and reinforced before I drive my car any further.

Thanks in advance.

Garrett: I think it will hold - mine look similar, they just don't extent as far onto the mount. Mine was done about 3 years ago and when the engine was pulled earlier this year still look great.

Newbium: I believe the engine must be removed. From your description it sounds like you need the fix Garrett and I have had done. If it breaks, your engine will fall out of the car - you need to decide how soon to have it fixed. A friends 993 engine partially fell out at the track when one of the two sides of the hanger failed (it's the same hanger as ours).

Looks good. I recently had a DE student suffer a failure at the Glen when the mount broke on his RSA. Luckily, no engine damage and just some very minor body work from the exhaust being pulled upwards.

It's almost been two years of racing and it's still holding!!!

Newbium - yes you can remove it without dropping the entire engine; just be sure to support it!

I need new motor mounts, how timely! Yipes, I don't know how to weld! I think I will just find a local crusty old guy and give him a few bucks to put gussets like Tom has.

Guys, considering the WEVOS...absolutely no track miles going on my car...in your opinion is this gusset welding or reinforcement still a MUST do???

I highly recommend the Rennline brace. They did a great job turning mine around in less than a week. Very happy with their quality.

I am surprised how wimpy the OEM carrier is. Porsche is so over built and this part bends like a soft noodle...

Garrett:

Nice work. In my welding circles we call that gorilla welding (ugly, but strong). What type of welder? I will guess flux core wire welding.
