My 964 (a '91 C4 with 31.5K miles on it) was behaving great all day. To close out the day I decided to stop and get some groceries. After doing so, I got back into the car and started off. I noticed what sounds like a drive line vibration (remember, it's a C4) and just blew it off. Well the noise got worse quickly, and I noticed that when I release the clutch I'm getting a thudding sound. If you can imagine releasing the clutch about 2/3rds way and then sliding your foot immediately off the clutch allowing it to "pop the clutch" it's sort of like that type of thud. If I put my foot on the gas suddenly I'm getting a lot of driveline noise...like a vibration.
This isn't the sound that I've typically heard of when others have told me about Freudenberg DMF failures, and the noise isn't severe yet. If I was completely unaware of the DMF problems with Freudenbergs, I'd almost think one of the engine mounts or maybe a support somewhere in the driveline had failed.
I think you're in for some expensive repairs <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" /> . Your description sounds like what happened to mine when it went. Aka, the $ound of money.

Dear Bill,
Sounds like a DMF failure to me. The thudding is the two masses working against each other rather than together. As I said in my earlier post, if the silicon damping fluid leaks out you are going to get stranded. This is not common but I know of two cases where this happens. Takes the clutch out very nicely and it stinks,
Ciao,
Adrian
