Steering Wheel Guts??
Yes, the Track Rocket is almost back in order, upon starting her up and embarking on my first "test drive" in six months...I noticed the dreaded airbag light and the horn didn't work.
The more I thought about it, the more I figured these two things could be related!??
...especially being that there were loud grinding/clicking noises coming from the steering column area.
SO, I did what any red-blooded tinkerer would do...I took it apart!!
I found a couple things "arrai":
1) the spring loaded contact that rides along the contact ring as the steering wheel turns so the horn works in all steering wheel positions was broke.
2) the "steering wheel guts" as I call them were a bit loose and seemed like the unit was busted.
Picture of the "guts" here:

Okay, so the "guts" are actually a 928 part# and they are basically a plastic, spring-loaded unit that encases the contacts for the horn and airbag leads...they also serve as a "cam" to cancel your turn signal.
QUESTION: Have any of you that replaced your steering wheel with an aftermarket Momo, Fittipaldi, etc. have one of these laying around??
If so, I would like to take if off your hands...as I believe the unit will be quite pricey.
If you have one, please email to advise!!
...and yes, this probably was broken during the accident I was involved in last Fall.

David, what can I say, the engine ROCKS!!
...and certainly with the help of your Pistons/Cylinders.
My Rocket is already 87lbs underweight for PCA "D" class...and I don't have the zillion dollars for an RS, Momo, etc. steering wheel...although that would look cool!
I just want everything working "proper"...basically to extinguish the airbag light correctly, and to get my horn working again!!
That unit is just a thin plastic piece, held on by the two screws at 1 O'clock and 7 O'clock (my thumb is covering the other screw in the pic).
ANYONE HAVE ONE LYING AROUND??
If not, guess I'll have to drop by the dealership tomorrow for a price check.

The price for this piece is quite high, the number is:
PN# 928.652.211.00 I have looked for one and ask for a quote and was around 180$ (For this price you could buy a new steering wheel)
I checked also at http://LAPORSCHE.COM and they had a used one for 100Usd it is funny in the 993 model Porsches price is like USD 88.
Finally I bought mine from Ebay (Germany)for around 39USD
Checked there out I saw several when I was looking for it.

Jeff,
I need to remove my steering wheel and wanted to know what steps I need to take in order to do that. I have a stock 964 and it has a driver side airbag. My concerns are to not deploy the airbag and to make sure I hook it up correctly when I reinstall the steering wheel so that it works. I have the Porsche workshop manuals, but they fail to discuss removing the steering wheel. If you can reference a book or another thread I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you

Patrick, you will need a six-point ribe socket to remove the two bolts from the rear of the steering wheel (when facing the wheel).
While sitting in the Driver's seat, feel the back of your wheel and you will find two holes, one on each side where you can access the bolts.
These bolts hold your airbag on...that's it...once removed, your airbag will come right off and you just unplug the harness from it.
Remember, because I didn't, and almost stripped the bolts, that "lefty-loosey/righty-tighty" doesn't work in this scenario...due to the fact that you will be actually removing the bolts in reverse from what you're used to.
In other words, you are used to facing the bolts and removing them TOWARDS you...and unless you work for Circ'du Soleil...you will be removing the bolts AWAY from you.
I stress this because as of the other day I am VERY experienced with the perils of removing my steering wheel...I almost stripped the bolts before I realized what I was doing wrong.
I would advise that you disconnect the battery first, just to ensure there is NO airbag deployment!
From there, just remove the large nut (from memory, is it 22-24mm??) and the wheel comes off, carefully feed the harness for your airbag back through the oval-shaped hole in the steering wheel.
Then, your situation will look a bit like my pic above.

There was a later software upgrade that shortens that time, however, you may want to wait the 20 minutes, maybe a bit more!

Thank you for the instructions. It doesn't sound that bad...I really wanted to avoid the air bag in the face thing.
One other question...Do you have a trick on steering wheel alignment when you do this (i.e. what spline lines up with what spline). Do you make a line on the wheel and the column before removal? Or do you just keep the wheels on the car straight and put the steering wheel back on straight (eyeball it). Anyway I appreciate your time and response.
Thank you

"Eye-balling" it will put you in good order.
The splines are fairly big, not fine like the earlier cars (from memory), so if you are one off, you'll really know it!
I just started my "tinkering" with the steering wheel in the straight position and made sure it went back on the same way.
