Tech help on steering rack lubricant?
I'm putting a new steering rack in and was reading the Workshop Manual 48-7 and it states assemble the rubber mounts and mounting clamps with OMNIS 32 (Texaco) before fitting the gear into the vehicle.
What is this product?
What is this product?
sorry this is not an answer.. but i do have a few questions.
Why did you change your steering rack? The reason I am asking is if you check an earlier post ( by me ) I was also in need of some tech advice. I was wondering did you have leaks or was you rack making noise? also did you replace the rubber grommets between the mounting bracket and the steering rack? mine are clicking and the noise is driving me crazy...

I was sooo excited that someone was going to give me the answer to the Omnis 32 question; and even though I'm using broadband your message took almost 5 minutes to load through Renn. Bummer...
Anyway maybe I can help you.
My rack is leaking. By reading the info in the Workshop manual the Bentley 964 info book and a DIY for the 993 on the internet I decided to replace the rack myself. The Workshop Manual specifically states that you replace the mounting bolts and the steering shaft coupling bolt when you replace the rack. I'm also replacing the rubber grommets since they are only a couple of $$. It states in the Workshop Manual to install the mounting grommets with Omnis 32 (Texaco). Doesn't say what it is, but figure that it must be a lubricant to keep the rack quiet and pro-long the life of the grommets. One of the guys at work said that he thought it was the same lube used on swaybar bushings. In that case it would be a Teflon lubricant.
So, your noise might be caused by the lack of this mysterious material.
I asked the guys at my local Porsche dealership and they shrugged their shoulders, I went on-line to Renn/ Pelican / and PCA sites, and no answer. I checked the product guides for Texaco on-line in America and Europe. This has me TEMPORARILY baffled. I did go to the local VW dealer to pick up the steering rack lubricant (listed in the workshop manual) used to lubricate the rack slide under the boots. They had never ordered it before, but it was available. They had never heard of Omnis 32 either. Maybe some joker at the factory just threw that in the Workshop Manual to screw with **** Porsche owners. Next thing I'll need is a left handed smoke shifter to install a muffler bypass? Who knows?
Hope this helps you.
It's a matter of getting a factory tech to answer what they use on the grommets.

Here's the scoop incase someone beside me cares.
Omnis 32 is a european only mineral based lubricant.
In America the Texaco name is: Canopus 32
Shell: Vitrea 32
I'm calling a local oil supplier this afternoon to pick it up.
