Unhappy Windscreen wipers and foglights playing up...

Hello All,

This weekend I had a couple of surprises when driving my 964.

First, I noticed the rear fog light switch in the dashboard was not lighting up. However, when I pushed it down a bit further it lighted up again, but after a few minutes it stopped again. getting out of the car to check if the fog lights were working with the switch on, I noticed they didn't.

Next thing, as I am pulling off the motorway (doing about 50 mph) all of a sudden my windscreen wipers start working by themselves! They seem to be on intermittent, though they don't respond that well to the timing **** on the dash. After restarting the car they seemed fine (though I didn't go much more than a mile and even that was at low speed).

Any ideas? Could the two above be related?

Thanks in advance.

Just a guess, but you could have a poor earth connection somewhere, so the current finds an 'alternative' path to ground, going through some strange circuits on the way.

John, thanks for the comment, although it will be quite hard to hunt around the car for a poor earth...

Anyone else have any ideas?

Would you believe it, the same thing has just happened to me. Poped out for a 5 minute drive and the wipers just will not turn off. They are on standard speed, they will speed up but not go to intermittent.

Earthing sounds like a good reason but where do you start looking, that cars got more loom than a 19th centry cotton mill!

Richard,

Its very annoying isn't it!? Makes you look like a right **** as well...

I haven't driven my car since, but in the meantime the battery has gone flat, not a good week for the 964!

Arh! the old flat battery problem, I was getting that as well....touch wood a new bosch battery has sorted it, although I've still to test the drain.

I had to pull the fuse this morning, it's got it's own fuse for just this eventuality.
On another post it's been suggested that it's the stalk at fault. Lets hope it doesn't rain (or snow) again until I get a change to investigate at the weekend.

Richard,

Do please let me know what you find out; as you well know its an extremely annoying problem!

By the way, is it clear which fuse it is? I might opt for that option for now. Actually, where are the fuses??

It's fuse 24, although just check on the inside lid of the fuse box.
The fuses are in a large puppawear box under the bonnet, between the scuttle and the petrol tank, looking from the front, it's on the left. You can't miss it it's got clips on it like an air filter.
There is even a handy little yellow tool for pulling the blighters out.

It's snowing again.....it had better stop!

I'm happy, it's not fixed but I can turn them off as it was only the relay.

I removed the relay, put the fuse back in and I now have off & onable wipers.

The relay just performs the intermitted function, the speed settings are wired to the motor. Interesting that it's a 928 part number.

Richard,

For now, touch wood, the problem seems to have dissapeared. Lets see if it occurs again...

Still have a bad connection in the foglight switch though. Nobody seems to know what to do though.
