Post Sell a 964 for a 993C4S or a 996C2/4?

A little question opened to any 964 owner:

If you want to sell your 964, which one would you like to buy (between these 3 possibilities)? Why?
- 993C4S
- 996 C2
- 996 C4

Ciao

If I absolutely had to choose it would be the 993C4S because I don't like the 996 Carrera.

If I was going to sell my 964 (which is not going to happen), it would have to be the 993C4S. The 996 just does not do it for me. Not because it's water cooled, but IMHO the styling seems too heavy handed - I don't like it.

For me, the best would probably be a mixture of a car with complete 993 mechanicals, but with that classic 964 shape. - I wonder if you can fit 964 front wings on a 993?!

It would have to be the 993C4S, as I just don't like the 996 shape.

When I started looking for a Porsche, I wanted a late '80s 3.2 Carrera, because of the shape. As soon as I drove the first 964 (just to see the difference), my mind was made up - traditional shape, with relatively modern handling! The rest, as they say, is history.

Ian

Again, if forced to sell my 964 (which I wouldn't want to as I now know it well) I'd go for the 993. Mainly because I like the shape of the 993 and dislike everything about the 996. There is also more moneny to be lost on those cars, whereas the 964 is now pratcially exempt from much depreciation (financial markets notwithstanding).

I do like the 996's 320BHP and the refinement BUT looks wise there's nothing to compare to the 993

None of the above. I wouldn't want a C4S because its four-wheel-drive. I like the lightness of my Carrera 2.

The "ideal" upgrade for me would be a maritime blue/cashmere interior/dark blue top 1996-1998 6 speed 993 cab, with the complete "993 RS" look (i.e., RS wing, 18 inch 3-piece RS wheels, and front splitters).

The 996 is too slab-sided and heavy for me.

Mr. MacDonald

I assumed he didn't want a 'none of the above' answer or he would have asked for it.

Christer,
Is your new year resolution to be polite? I've seen two posts from you that start "Mr..." which is just not what we've come to expect! To be fair, the content of the posts follows your usual style....

To answer the thread - I'd go for the 993, since I actually think 996s are ugly (sorry any 996 owners). However - I've been toying with the idea of a 993 for the past few weeks, or spending money on mine. I stuck mine in Autotrader this afternoon thinking I'd see if anyone wanted it and decide that way. Having done that though, I've decided it's a bad idea and at this moment in time I want to keep it - so I'm about to call my mechanic and order my RUF suspension kit.

There have been many discussions on the 996, but here is a recent one that presents very strong reasons why I would NEVER touch a 996 nor a Boxster!

Very true (about the 996) . My dad just bought a GT2. He had no intention of spending that kind of money, originally he just wanted to get a C2 cab. But, after driving EVERY model porsche makes, including the GT2, he determined that it was the only car that "felt" like a porsche, and ponied up the extra cash.

He is a long-time porsche enthusiast. He started with a 58 speedster, then a 912, 911, 911sc, 964 C2 cab (now mine) and finally the GT2.

I would go with the 993 C4S if I had to have one of the above, but would prefer the 993 C2S.

Yes, the 993 C2S was built in 1996-1998, but only in coupe form (no cabrios or targas). Going from my 964 cab to coupe (even a C2S coupe) would be a "step down" for me, not an upgrade.

If I wanted a car to use daily, I would probably buy a 996 C2 if I was getting rid of my 964 (which ain't gonna happen any time soon). A more simple '99 (no PSM or drive by wire) or the higher power '02 model would probably be my preference. I personally feel the C2 model is more traditional verses the more mechanically complex and heavier AWD C4.

I've gotten used to the 996 and they do look good in my book (though the older cars [pre 996] will always be my favorites). The 996 interior is a let down though because not much is left of tradition other than the remote visual cue to the 5 dial dash that was in place since 1965.

I would assume the bump in power from a 964 to a 996 would be more tangible than the difference between a 964 and a 993 (especially a widebody 993 C4).

Plus, these 996's, especially the early one's, are pretty inexpensive for what you get. Also, having an ugly duckling early 964 with all it's shortcomings, I'd be used to the stigma attached to the early 996's and their failing rear main seals and other common, but fixable, problems. I've always liked the underdog though too...

If I wanted a weekend / show car only, I would probably have to pick the 993 C4S. Traditional air cooling just can't be beat when going for fun drives.

Just my $.02...
