Default Brake light failure

My brake lights stopped working yesterday, so I replaced the #19 fuse which accommodates both the brake lights and the cruise control. This didn't solve the problem. I tested the cruise control to see if it was working and it is not. I tried a second fuse just in case I had a bad one and still no dice.

Any thoughts as to what else I could try before I make my mechanic just a little more wealthy?

You might want to look at the lights themselves. I started having problems with the brake lights and assumed it was wiring, fuses, etc. but couldn't find anything wrong. Finally I went to the bulbs, and found out that the tail light assembly had started leaking and the contacts going to both of the lights had become corroded. I replaced the bulbs, cleaned the contacts, and sealed the light assembly with some clear silicone caulking compound. Now they're working. I also had a problem with oxidation on the cable feeding the rear end lights about a year ago.
