Post C2 RS Brake Upgrade

Time has come to replace the front rotors and all four pads on my RS. I'm thinking about upsizing front and rear discs. Has anyone considered this or could you steer me to a previous post/website which discusses pros/cons? Thebrakes are already very good, but I'm curious whether I can squeeze a 380mm disc in the wheels. I live in the UK.

322mm discs is the max you can go with the RS calipers.

you can go to 330mm discs if you use 993TT calipers and 18" wheels (they wont go with 17" wheels).

380mm wont go (except on gt cars). even bigger calipers required and not enough room under the standard arches (iirc)

Why do you want to upgrade the brake on an RS?

In standard form they are more than enough for an RS, 930 Motorsport do a 360 bhp conversion and retain the standard brakes.

I don't know what wheels you are using at the moment, but I would not recommend 18" rims on an RS it really spoils the fantastic delicate feel these cars have.

However it's your car and your money!!

If you go bigger on your brakes you will have to go to 18" wheels.

380mm will fit on the front, Cargraphic or BBS rims will house them.

It is very common to fit the big reds at the front with the 330mm disc, these discs and calipers were fitted on the 3.6 turbo and 3.8RS versions.

If you upgrade to 380mm fronts, then you would certainly need the 350mm rears to match. This is a very expensive upgrade, and only really suitable for racing or serious track work

A simple, relatively cheap upgrade is to use '92 and later 928 GTS front calipers which are identical to 3.6 Turbo "Big Red" front calipers but are black in color, so color matches your rears. I should point out the logo "Porsche" is in a smaller font than on your RS calipers. You will have to remove and swap brake bleeders and brake line crossover tubes up for down in order to mount direction of rotation correctly. Use with 322 mm 3.6 Turbo front discs. You gain a larger front pad area and more efficient use of swept area on disc.

High,
If i moved my original front calipers to the rear is it neccesary to make the disk larger also?, I did get new ones that are cross drilled from AJR, and if it is set up w/ the original size rear discs what are the side effects? I did change the bias valve. thanx, george.

ps. using 3.6 calipers and rotors(322mm) on the front.

Thanks for the comments. i ended up going with the stock set-up. Why larger brakes? Can you ever have too much braking power? As for 18" rims, George, have you put 18" rims on your RS? How do you know if it upsets the balance?

Yes you can have too much braking power, especially with the ABS system. However the old saying when driving a Porsche still applies. "It is not how fast you can stop, it is how fast the guy behind you can stop". There is also a point at which the tyres cannot support the braking power as well. We are talking road cars here by the way not race cars.

I have driven an RS with speedline 18" rims and it felt completely different, the increased wheel width at the front and the reduced tyre profile did not improve the car.

Porsche put a lot of work into the 964 RS and it left the factory a very good neutral handling car.

But hey each to their own!!

I don't mean to sound critical, and please don't take it that way...but I certainly hope you guys that are modifying/upgrading your brake systems are using your 964s on the track. I have the factory setup on my '91, with the exception of an upgrade to four piston calipers on the rear (from a '92) and my car stops like a dream - for a minimum of 10 track events a year!

The caliper/rotor setup on an RS is a considerable amount beefier than mine, and those cars are quite a bit lighter as well...so I really don't see the sense in spending the insane amount of $$$$$ that it would take to upgrade to bigger rotors/calipers.

Mbster, I'm glad to hear that you stuck with your original setup...after all, I would have driven you nuts BEGGING for your "original" setup for MY car!! My point is, if you drive your 964, whether it's an RS, RSA, C4, C2 or Cup Car on the street...just enjoy the wonderfully designed piece of technical speedware...if you track it, well then...
