Post replacing the carerra badge

has anyone replaced the stock carerra badge that is on the rear spoiler of their '90-94 carerra?

any tips for taking the old one off and replacing with a new one?

do the replacements come with an adhesive backing on them?

Scott,

To remove the old one pour hot water on it and it will go, then wax the area to get rid of all glue residue and yes, the new one comes with adhesive.

I have heard of peole removing it by heating for a while with a hairdryer, followed by use of dental floss.

I'll go for #2...after all, that's how I just did it.

The adhesive gets real soft once you heat it up with a hair dryer...as for the residue, heat that up and roll it up with your fingers, it will come off pretty easy.

Yes, a decent cleaner wax should remove it, like P21S or Zymol...I've used both.

Johannes...HOT WATER?? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Okay, how hot? ...it sounds feasible, but I haven't heard of that technique, guess it worked for you once?

Jeff,

Did it on my 968CS, the garden hose has hot and cold and "coffe" hot temp did the trick!

Ciao,

Johannes

Just curious, but why are you replacing it. I removed mine, cleaned it, applied new adhesive tape and reinstalled.

Just a note but the "Carrera" decal is now a 993 part and is about 1" or so smaller than the 964 one. If the paint is marked underneath it may show past the new badge!!

you guys ROCK!

thanks for the excellent advice.

the C on my badge broke off when drying with a towel as well.

and was thinking about replacing it also with the silver 993 emblem. that it would look great since my car is black/black.

sure appreciate the info and web site reference.

thanks

scott

911Pervy, you are so VERY correct on that! I am getting my 964 repainted, after a bit of creaative cosmetic artistry.

...and I ordered a new "Carrera" insignia, along with a "2" - the "2" is full size while the "Carrera" noticeably smaller! <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />

Make sure to demand the original 911 "Carrera", or "Carrera" (1) insignia...it's a 911 part# which they tend to "upgrade" you to the smaller 993 part#.

WTF??

You think that's crazy?? ...wait till you order a new head temp sensor, it's now FOUR part#s and you have to put the damned thing together!

I have the small "Carrera" syndrome too.. The original owner had the engine hatch repainted and they replaced the emblem with the 993 version. I am heading to the parts department today for something else but I am going to ask if I can still get the older larger emblem.
Did a quick check on mine last night and it will come off with the old "fishing line" or "dental floss" trick!

Here are the part numbers being discussed:

964-sized "Carrera": 911.559.037.00 70C
"2": 964.559.241.01 70C
"4": 964.559.241.00 70C

70C is the color code for black.

John, I went to an auto body shop and bought the adhesive material from them. If my failing memory serves, it was a 3M product. It was a double sided adhesive strip. I peeled off one side, laid the emblem on it and then the painstaking process of cutting around the lettering with a razor knife started. This was not difficult, but I had to take my time. The biggest problem was finding the perfect centre on the engine hood and then lining up the "Carrera" and the "2". Again, taking my time and careful measurements prevailed. I used a wax crayon to mark the spots so that they would easily wife off later. The adhesive is so strong that you only get one chance to set the emblem in place. If you miss, you start over.

I did my emblem replacement today. After removing my old emblem with hot water and some dental floss I took a picture to show the size difference.
<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/emblempic.jpg" alt=" - " />

Here is the final product (Before on left and After on right). The entire job took about 25 minutes.
<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/emblems.jpg" alt=" - " />

I had to replace the "4" also. It was originally centered for the small (993) logo. The cost was about $25 in total for both emblems from my local Porsche department. That includes my 10% PCA discount.

After polishing the marks out from the old emblem I used my wife’s eyeliner (works like a grease pencil) to draw a straight line about 6 ¼” from the bottom of my spoiler. I also measured the width of the hatch to find the center. The entire emblem with the "4" was 14” wide. I centered the emblems and wiped off the eyeliner. Try to get it straight on your first try. You may not have a second chance, that glue is really sticky.
