Alternator fan rattling

Alternator fan rattling
Well, I drove to work today and as I pulled into the parking spot I noticed a loud rattling coming from the area of the fan housing. I can definately feel it if I put my hand on the fan shroud. The alternator was just replaced about a month ago by a Porsche shop. The rattling definately just started, because it's loud. What are we likely looking at here? Could they have put the pulleys, etc. on wrong and now the alternator shaft is out of alignment. I have about a 1/2 hour drive back home today.

Tom, Once, as PM, I replaced my belts, and accidentally put one of the spacers in backward. Well, this locked both pulleys together, and the belt smoked, and was history after driving just 50'. What I would do, if you have the time/inclination, is to take off the belts, so as to check play in the shaft, spin the fan by hand, check for radial play, and carefully reassemble. Just for the hell of it, why not also look in the bottom, under the pulleys, to see if it something simple like a piece that fell underneath the pulleys and is rattling?

Dear Tom,
Take it back to the shop that did the job abd get them to fix it. Something has come loose and possibly even fallen out. Maybe the tensioning shims. It is hard to say but driving around like this is not a good idea. The bearings in the fan and the alternator will not take kindly to such treatment. One month is as far as I am concerned within any after job warranty.
I wish I could offer more help but it is not possible over cyberspace,
Ciao,
Adrian
