Stealing, I once heard of a guy that walked into the local department store wearing an outfit similar to the real personell working there. He simply said "Service, let me get this puppy out.." and he grabbed the biggest TV he could find. The personel even held the doors open for him. I can admire that in a way, it's not too bad, the guy who climbs into an old lady's house to go get her cherished jewelry, or the car that is very very dear to someone, that is a different story .. At the dealership where I worked they once drove off with a brand new car that just came off the trailer, it was still packed in plastic and had the styrofoam wheel covers etc. .. -no- one saw them.. the car was never found.

As for theft preventative measures .. I would not mess with the spark plug wires too much .. they are expensive, and when they get older they can just go bad from moving them around a little.

Unplugging the DME is a good thing, yet you have to remove the seat.. removing the wheels.. yeah .. would work .. but too much work for me..

If it is seriously threatened, I would consire a line lock in the brake system, one or two. It is installed into your brake lines, to engage it you step on the brakes, step on the line lock and it will keep the brakes engaged till it is released. If it's parked where they can't get at it with a tow truck it will be very hard to move it. But once they figure out what the problem is it would be very easy to simply open the bleeding valves on one or more of the calipers right trough the wheels.

Also, next time they call, invite them to come steal it.. so you can get yourself a real 964 instead of this '75 912E conversion, they might just believe it.

Pulling the #50 connection off of the starter motor may leave them searching for a start-block device of some sort, since everything appears to be normal, but it won't start, anyone experienced at stealing Porsches would carry a portable power source I think, so removing the battery alone wouldn't do it. A switch could do this disconnecting from a hidden place inside the car.

I once had an alarm go off in a customers car, the siren was *in* the car! .. and it was so loud, and at this certain frequency, that you just *had* to leave the car .. nothing else mattered, you just felt like getting away asap .. like an instinctive something..

Or, buy a minivan car-cover and a stack of foam.
're-shape' your 964 into a minivan using foam, then put the cover over it, it may help. Or make it look like a Pinto

That's about all I can think of right now, I hope it helps, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nothing will happen to your baby.

As a side note, if someone has the 964 and/or 3.6 turbo factory manuals and would be willing to look some data up, pls drop me an email @ verbeekb@dejazzd.com.

Have a nice day all,

Brian

This might be a dumb idea, but hey, I *am* blonde, so I'm allowed.

Instead of removing the entire DME, how about pulling the DME relay, which is in the fuse box in the front compartment?

I'm pretty sure the car won't start or run without it. Do you think the people who want to take your car would have the sense to bring a spare DME relay?

Unplugging and plugging the brain repeatedly as a theft prevention measure is not a good idea, the connectors and wiring is fragile and you may introduce faults that will be very difficult to track down later. It is not recommended to fool around with it.

You must move the car if you think the tip is bonafide. Otherwise it may be stolen or even vandalized if the theif is thwarted.

Is Lojack available in your area? If it is have them install it ASAP! Also what about installing a security cam set up. A couple of years ago I had a high end stereo installed in my car only to have it stoled a week later. Bad luck? No. The police asked me where I had it installed and informed me that they had alot of car stereos ripped off from the same install store location (which is a national chain). Here is what I do now to protect my car and bike. I REMOVE anything that has my home address from the vehicle when it goes in for any type of service or repair. This includes Registration and Proof of insurance or any bills or letters. If the Shop asks for you address for 'it's records', give them your work address or make one up. This includes mail order business. Have your items shipped to your work. You can have an 'alternate shipping address' listed with your cardholder. They don't need it for anything.

Professional thieves put in orders with people who work in service or repair facilities. If they are looking for a C4 CAB, they put out feelers like a work order. Do you think it is chance that a thief just happened to drive past you porsche at 3AM?

Another thing we can do is use metal rubber coated wire the 'chain' the hood down. What this does is after the alarm is activated, the thief goes to the hood to cut the main battery wire or horn wire. When they can't get the hood completly open, it confuses them and stalls their plan.

Good luck folks, hope these tips help. Any other tips out there?

I work for a phone company in Canada. I don't know about your systems out there, but even if the privacy protection is activated, the phone company can still track down the phone number that has called you. If you file a criminal complaint, the police will be able to determine who called you. You can then use that information to determine if the threat is real or if it's just a prankster.

The phone number may even lead you to the individual who is hoping you will move your car to somewhere *less* secure than it is now or someone who will wait for you to move your car from its current location and attempt to carjack you.

If it were my car, I'd just make sure the insurance is kept current, I'd notify the police of the phone call you got and I'd sleep well. If it gets stolen, it's just a car, you can always replace it. Life is too short to worry about these things.

As an aside, I disconnect the battery in my 944S when it goes into hibernation just to keep the DME etc from draining it to dangerously low levels (takes about 3 weeks)so that a) the battery doesn't freeze, and b) so I can start it in the spring.

Having digested your many varied and useful suggestions, I'm probably going to end up moving the car.

I can't pull the seat/wheels/steering wheel every time, so this makes the greatest sense in the short term. I have a good line on two very secure locations.

Of course, the car is indeed insured, and if it were stolen, it would not be the end of the world. Having said that, however, it IS my very first P-car, I've only owned it for 2 1/2 months, I've only DRIVEN it 3 times, I flew 5,000 miles to find it, and I'd probably lose $5-10,000 on the insurance settlement. Plus, I'd have a helluva time trying to find another one as nice, for as good a price.

All in all, I'd rather be able to sleep at night.

Thanks again to everyone for coming to my rescue!

I'll let you know how it turns out...

I've scanned the above replies. First thought is (I used to be an investigator in a previous life) How did this person know to call you? trying to trace the call is in order, I believe. Have you informed the Polizei? Second, the seats don't need to be removed to take out the DME. Only slide the seat backward, unplug, and take out the four (I believe 10mm) nuts off the studs. Should take mabey 10 minutes, max. Third, Lowjack, if available is an excellent idea. fourth if someone is determined, they will steal it; but, there are lots of other excellent replacement cars out there

Guys (and girls, sorry Melissa!!!)

I agree with Christer, we need to get this into some sort of perspective.

I keep my high risk, rare RS on the road, outside my house in an area where car theft is fairly high.

The car has a Clifford Category 1 alarm immobiliser plus a clifford jack plug type of immoboliser.

So to start the car the key needs to be turned within 30 seconds or will not start plus the jack plug has to be inserted and removed (a jumbo jet starting procedure is probably easier!!)

The wheels also have coded locks so if a thief actually manages to steal it, well I will have to claim on my insurance and buy another car.

If your 964 causes you that much anxiety you have to ask yourself the question, is it worth it?

There are better things in life to worry about like forgetting Valentines Day!!!!! <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

I am hoping the Taycan is as good or even better than any Tesla car out there. I want it to put fire under all the BEV producers that a still better car can be made.

But with a production run of only 30,000 and *ALL* of them already spoken for there is no threat to Tesla or any other successful BEV car company at present.

It is going to be a few years before anyone can challenge them.

Are you aware that you responded to a 17-year old thread with information that had nothing to do with the content of the thread?
