Use of Mobil 1 or BP 7000 0w40 oil.
Hello People,
I want to tell you all my experiece with the use of 0w40 oil in my car.
There are different opinions about using the right oil for your car, wich for every country may me different because of the temperature difference.
My experiece in the last 4000 km's, in a 137000 km's Porsche is next.
Engine cold, full 5 bar of pressure.
Engine temprature is between eight and nine o'clock on the meter with a oil pressure of 5 bar on 1500 rpm and up. 1.9 bar on 900 rpm.
Oil temprature 10 o'clock [slow traffic and city/blower oil cooler is switched on] oil pressure 1500 rpm and up is 4>5 bar, 1,3>1,5 bar at 900 rpm.
Oil checked 4000 km's ago, max., oil check this afternoon at hot engine 75% of max. scale, checked in engine compartment.
0w40 oil is a oil wich can be used in a wide range of tempeature difference, means that the 0 is for condition of the oil in cold condition, the 40 means oil condition in warm condition.
Better for colder countries is the 0 for let the oil come there a.s.a.p. where it should be in could start condition. 40 is in warm condition of the engine the condition of the oil. This means that a 10w40 and a 15w40 has the same hot condition specifications as a 0w40. [only difference could be that the 0w40 is fully synthetic oil]
My experience is good, what you want to do in your car is your own choice.
I can only give you people my opinion.
Hopes someone can can use this.
Have a nice weekend you all,
Arjan

I think that your rational for 0-W40 is good except for areas where there are really extreme temperatures like -0 degrees and +40 degrees celcius.
Does anyone have a view on the suitability of Penzoil "Performax" its 0-W50 and supposedly has ingredients to protect the engine on cold starts.
The 964 carries so much oil (about 8 litres) I've got to buy 2 containers, but I don't mind because good oil is worth the cost to me of not having a major engine failure.
I love these new faces

Dear Stephen,
Living in a country where it is somtetimes very hot is using a 0w50 perfect.
You have the maximum protection at cold start conditions and for the hotter days the '50'for max. protection of your engine.
When Mobil or Bp had 0w60, I would do this in my car. [Castrol had 10W60 racing synthetic for a few years ago, I don't know if they still have, this was often used as oil for racing cars.]The numbers are the viscosity of the oil, and tested for wide range of use.
When you have a outside temp. form - 5 degr. celcius and lower, and you would use a 15w50 oil, you have the problem that the oil in cold condition [15] is very thick and takes to long to reach the important parts of the engine.
This oil could be used very good in countries where it never freezes.
Do you understand??
The 0w40 and 5w40 oils are specially made for wide range protection of your engine.
The only thing that 'could' happen is that your engine consumps a little more oil, this is no problem at all.
My car does not use more. My oil consumption is normal as with a 'in cold condition ticker'oil.
Hopes this helps.
Greetings,
Arjan

I have been led to believe that a wide range of viscosity is not always good. Its sounds nice but the vi improvers needed in the oil distract from the lubricating properties thus defeating the wide vi.

Hello People,
In my profession as a service manager in a GM dealership with the brand Opel, we work with 80 people in this dealership, and have a lot of experiece in automotive technique over the last 35 years.
We have cars with engines from 1000cc till 3200cc in sevice right now, service also Bmw, Chrysler, Mercedes, Ford and some other brands with more cc engines nearby.
Also we have much diesel cars, because diesel powered cars are in our country loved of the reason we pay aprox. 1 Euro [0.90 US Dollar cent]
for 1 liter [aprox. 1/4 of a Us Gallon] of Gasoline fuel. Diesel cars use less fuel and diesel is cheaper in our country.
What I want to tell you is that cars wich ran 300.000 km's and up use this 0w40 and 5w40 oil for years in outside tempratures from -15 degr. celc. till 35 + degr. celc., Diesel or Gasoline and Lpg [liqued petrol gas] or gas powerd cars, and we had NEVER any engine damage wich could lead to the oil. [only people that forgot to check oil level]
I see more then once a week that mechanics open up the top of a engine to replace valve cover gaskets in case of an oil leak, and then I see nice looking camshafts and clean looking cylinderhead.
So, the only reason I can think of not using 0w40 or 5w40 full synthetic oil is it could be that the oil consumption may be a little higher for some cars.
Most Porsche's in The Netherlands and Germany have notification on the Blower in the back of the car with "Porsche's advice: Use Mobil 1 for a longer life of your engine" on it.
It can even as good be that Shell, Pennzoil, Valvoline and other brands have the same top quality oil, but we where talking about the viscosity of those oils.
The extra oil you fill, you safe on fuel!!
Have a nice Sunday you all,
Greetings,
Arjan
