Question Interior size question

I'm going to be buying my first car in a few weeks, and it's almost certainly going to be a 964 (probably a C2, '90 or '91). However, I have a few questions:

Firstly, how big are these cars on the inside? I'm 6'4 (and quite big, too). In a 996, I have to have the seat all the way back, reclined a bit, and with the steering wheel adjusted to be nearer to me - how does a 964 compare? I also noticed that the seats in the 996 were a little narrow - the lower back supports dig into my back. Is this going to be a problem?

Secondly (I'm going to get laughed at here :¬) - how easy is it to fit a bike rack to a 964? I *really* need to be able to carry bikes. Does the tequipment rack fit to a 964, and what are the alternatives?

Thanks.

Dear Eion,
The only practical advice I can give you is to try it out yourself. We all come in different shapes and sizes and well some people fit comfortably and others do not. You might find a RHD 964 a little uncomfortable as compared to a LHD 964 because of the pedal layout.
As for the bike rack. The TEquipment version is designed for the 996 and Boxster. Again you will have to try one out to see. Gop talk to oyur local TEquipment stockist or ask the question of TEquipment via the Porsche web site.
I wish I could help more but these are personal rather than technical questions which can only be answered by doing or checking for yourself.
If you do not like narrow seats ensure you avoid a 964 like mine with sports seats fitted,
Ciao,
Adrian

Eion,

I echo what Adrian is saying. Try it out for size first!

I am 6"5' and I do have difficulty fitting inside comfortably. This is particularly annoying because it means I can't even get in with a helmet for track days.

I also found that RHD cars were virtually impossible to drive for me, so I ended up buying a LHD (and bought a newer car and saved some money in the process)

By the way, I definitely am on the skinny side, weighinig in at just 12.5 stone.

As far as roof racks go both Yakima and Thule offer racks that should work. Check out Yakima or Thule. For some reason I only saw a Thule rack that would fit listed on their US site and not the European site.

Thanks for all the replies!
I probably should have said - I'll be buying a left-hand drive car, because I'm moving to the US. Thanks for the warning on the sports seats. The problem is, the place I'm moving to in the US is in the middle of nowhere, so I've got a minimum 300 mile journey to any car I'd be buying - so the car I go and see will almost certainly (depending on PPI) be the one that I buy.

I had fit a Yakima rack on my 81SC, and it fit just fine. Previously I had the same rack on an 84 Volvo. Rain gutters are rain gutters. The Yakima equipment is top notch, strong, and well thought out.

As far as seats, if you happen to fit in Recaro SRD's, you can pick up 1/2"-3/4" of extra headroom using flat rails, maybe the same with other seats. If it's really serious, you could relocate the DME, and reduce the seat riser height, or eliminate it. I know one fellow who is maybe 6'4" who removed the riser and bolted his seat to the floor in his 911SC.

Eion,

I'm 6'4" 100kgs and have a '93 Turbo 3.6 with sports seats. My femur contributes most to my height and I fit fine after I had the seat moved back one notch. In fact I can only just reach the steering wheel if I have the seat right back and angled back a bit.

As for the sports seats, I agree with Adrian. A few more kgs and I wouldn't fit.
