They save approximately 476 grams each!

I'm still awe-struck by the suspension componentry you posted on the 993 board.

Bob, I've read enough of your threads to have a grasp of the intent behind what you are doing and understand the racing focus. I do have a question: do you think that some of the thinking and technology you are using may find its way into the high-end tuners (e.g. RUF) offerings or are there longeivity issues around some of the materials in areas like suspension that make them less suited for road use?

Again, many thanks for sharing the progress on Rennlist. I, for one, gain a lot of vicarious pleasure from seeing this project evolve.

Regards

Where did you get the carbon fiber door pouch covers? Are they custom made? How much if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks,
Peter

Peter,

Robert makes them himself. He's been doing numerous parts for the 964 (and 993) out of carbon fiber. Do a search for his user number and you can see the other parts he's done.

Robert,

One question, aren't all your project parts supposed to be for racing cars? If so, then why bother with door pockets? Surely no racing car has got any form of trim inside?

Yes, my focus is one very high performance applications. Every once in a while, however, there is a "street part" that lends itself to weight reduction and this was one of them. Also, several months ago, we made the arm rests/door pulls that lead into the doors for the door pockets and several Rennlisters suggested that this piece also be made.

The rectangular things (there is one in each door) are ashtray -- as the center console in the vehicle eliminated the center ashtrays, these were designed.

As to the designer of the Cayenne, while Herr Lagaay is the Chief Designer of Porsche, I do not believe he personally penned the SUV.

Are the carbon fiber door parts for sale or did you just make them for your own car? If available how much are they?

Thanks,
Peter

Robert,

could you explain the center console and the electronics that it contains - not sure but is that a DSP for the stereo? and the switch?
& did you ever finish the Ti exhaust system - i saw the cold air peices - very nice

These peices represent a Porfolio of work that can be done - not production aftermarket peices. I believe Robert is building these parts to showcase the possibilities to high level racing teams on what can be accomplished in extreme weight reduction. IMHO this is R&D for future peices for race cars. It would be very cool to see a GT3RS at 1700 LBS (of course you would have to balist it back up to minium class weight but you then have the oppritunity to locate the weight where it does the most good (low and centered))
Unless you are will to throw some serious money at making a small run of these bits, they are one off's and would be priced as such (so really spendy) i would imagine the quality being 4-5X of the typical carbon fiber aftermarket stuff which is pretty spendy for what you get. I just bought a 3.8 tail for my 92 (about 1500.00) and still need to paint and finish it - there is no way i could leave it unpainted and have it look at fit good. (that and the car is white so an unfinished CF piece is a bit boy racerish for me)
All IMHO

The piece in the center console is a one-off Porsche graphic equalizer. The black button is the master switch for the telephone system (by the way, the fender titanium mounted antenna is AM/FM/cellular and automatically rises upon incoming calls and lowers at the end of the call). Given the extra weight of these components, however, the vehicle somewhat compensates by a total lack of rear speakers and a lightweight chip based amplifier.

As to the quality of first-class carbon fiber, while being 5x better than average aftermarket might be a bit of overstatement, it certainly is higher quality, lighter weight, generally stronger and with a far superior fit and finish.

Finally, the titanium muffler has been completed and a test model made from thin wall inconel is a few weeks from completion. Given heat and vibration issues, we will see which one delivers the best package of heat adaptation/durability/weight. Additionally, other parts of the exhaust system have been enhanced and reduced in weight using thin wall 321, titanium and carbon fiber.

[Irreverent Query]
What's the purpose of the leather condom on the tiptronic shifter seen in some of the images?
