Any suggestions for removing some of the nuts from the exhaust manifold on a 964 or 911 ? One nut on either side defies a socket -- socket fits, but without a handle. Is their a special tool for this?

Remove any debris accumulated in the hex head. Heat it to cherry red with a torch of some sort...glowing red....and them immediately apply the wrench being careful not to go off center and strip it. This applies to the standard nuts on them too. you may in the course of this exercise also unscrew a stud with the nut but that's hardly the problem a broken stud will cause.

I had the same problem when removing my heat exchangers. A 13mm Universal socket worked for me.
I went through a number of tools to try and find one that worked. A standard 13mm socket would not allow the handle to fit. Couldn't get an open/closed end wrench to fit. Even a deep offset open/closed wrench didn't work. So I tried a standard universal joint with 13mm socket attached, and that wouldn't fit. Then I found the 13mm universal socket, which did the trick. This allowed the handle to attach to the socket.
And I second the use of a good penetrating oil before trying to remove the nuts!

Creamer,
Go to Sears, they have a 13mm low profile socket combined with a universal joint, 3/8 drive. Works like it was made for it. Combine that with a 6 inch extension, and you can get all of the 13mm nuts off with it. If this is the first time they were removed, they will be snug. But it will work.
