Yikes!! Clutch!
Rennlist Member
My clutch on my '91 Turbo has finally faded. The car has done 75000 km, with the original clutch. Over the last 9000km (my ownership) I have driven reasonably spiritedly, but not brutally. In other words, I will give the car a punch from the slow lane to pass traffic, or drop a gear or two on the open road, but I don't rev to the redline and drop the clutch from standstill. Also, the car has done one track day (two weeks ago).
On the weekend I pulled away from a stop street quite quickly when the clutch just gave up the ghost... the engine revs up but the car doesn't go anywhere.....accompanied by the smell of burnt socks.
By contrast, I have had several other cars over the years and the clutches have lasted into the 150000kms... and more. I had a VW Passat back in the 80's that did 230000km on it's clutch. And I drove it hard (young, horny...you get my point
).Any comments? How long do these clutches last on average?
Perhaps a poll?
Fact is, I'VE never had a clutch last more than 20K!! <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />
My factory clutch gave up the ghost the second day I owned my car, at 51K...now that's funny!
Do your shopping and find a decent upgrade with a "sport" disk if that interests you...it shouldn't offer anymore of a "harsh" launch, just more grip.

With normal driving with some spirited interludes you should get 80,000km (50k miles) out of a 964 clutch NA and Turbo. Trips to DEs and the track will reduce this. Any more than 80,000km is a bonus. I know of some up around 120,000km and I am sure there are others higher. However to be honest these are the pampered versions of the 964.

Whilst all the banter about clutches is about I thought I might rub some salt in those wounds ....
Only joking, I actually need some advise in the Tiptronic area please (If anyone has knowledge of these boxes)
Has anyone changed their Tiptronic gearbox oil, Was is difficult and could this be a DIY project for a Saturday afternoon?
Also, Has anyone got a diagram of where the filter, drain plugs and level indicators are for the box.....
Other than that, The boxes are apparantly bullet proof!

All this data is contained in your owners manual I think. Yes I also have this data in the complete maint manual on the tip but the servicing issues are contained in the owners manual.

Given the clutch did 75000 km, and had at least one track day... and I do drive pretty spiritedly on the road too... I'm happy with the lifespan.
Will look into the sporty clutch, tho!
Ta.
