Gearbox noise
On my 964 RSL the gearbox is perfect in operation, but at idle it is noisy.
I am assuming it is the layshaft as it goes when the clutch is dipped. Is this normal?
On both my old BMW M5 the same noise was apparent with the same symtom. On that car it was a fault (i.e worn bearings) but agin had no ill effect on the operation of the box. I knew of a few M5s where the fault had been apparent for 50k miles +.

The noise you describe is most probably caused by the LWF installed in your car. It rattles at idle and can 'growl' a little at standing starts, this is normal. When in gear and acclerating you should not hear any noises.
Hope this helps.

The noise is the result of the single mass flywheel. It is not what is considered a lightweight flywheel. It is basically the same as the 89 C4 flywheel with a new motronic timing ring. The noise you are hearing was the reason the double mass flywheel was used from 1990 onwards. The lack of soundproofing in the RS also plays a role. As things wear this noise will increase. Has this noise been evident since you have owned the 964 RS or is it something new? How long have you actually owned this RS?

Your replies put my mind at rest!
Adrian, the noise has always been there. I have had the car nearly 1 week and love it!
I bought it off Tech 9 in Hale , England. I can thoroughly recommend them as real enthusiasts and friendly with it.
I had always longed for a 964 RSL since I sold my 3.2 Carrera, but lots of magazine articles in the early 90s put me off as they said it was too harsh.
I was about to buy a 993 Carrera 2S when I saw my RSL at a Porsche show, chatted to Phil at Tech 9 who told me what a great machine the RSL was . I test drove it and yes it is harsh and probably too harsh for everyday it struck all the right notes.
I have never driven a more involving road car. I cannot wait to get it on the track to compare it to my racing Escort!
Thanks for your replies!
kind regards
