Post HELP! Damping Plates??

In the middle of the brake job and have run into the damping plates - just did a search here - are damping plates necessary? Is anyone running without them? New or reuse?. One of the used ones will not fit back into the piston (the mushroom hat portion). Is their purpose only anti squeal?

Thanks.

I reused mine. I found that each piston seems to have it's own size damp plate. I couldent get mine together at first, till I compared the plate... and found it the correct home. Odd, since the pistons / clipers LOOK the same.

I run without damping plates, however, I also run with Pagid pads that do squeal a bit. The tradeoffs for performance that we endure...

Went over on Pelican and read the archives there too. Decided to leave the damping plates off.

Got the front rotors and pads changed but that lower 10 mm hex nut on the rear caliper beat me. Did not have the right tool to go through suspension hole thangee. Damn! Went out on a test run - no squealing from the fronts. Decided to use Metalmasters for the street. Will swap out when I do DEs. Without the damping plates, the pad swap should be far easier!!

And a final note - man, those spring clips are a bitch to get off and on, even after reading Jeff's explanation from two years ago. Give me the old SC spring clips. So simple!

Gotta find that looooong 10mm hex for the rears. Sears and Advanced Auto racks were half empty of tools. Really frustrating.

Chuck,

I had to order the 10mm extended hex socket for the rear caliper. Maybe Snap on or Mac tools might carry it. Think I got mine from Performance Products.

Thanks, Bill.

Yep, you're right. Found the tool on the Snap On web site. (Part Number FAML10E) -

Appears that I have a 4th of July brake project.
