Post Bodywork question pls

Hi,

Rather sooner than later I will need to take care of a rust bubble situated just at the rubber seal of the front windshield. The bubble is about 0.5 by 0.5 inch big.

The front windshield needs to be taken out to take good care of the rust. My bodywork-shop told me however that they can not garantee the windshield won't brake while removing it. In other words at my own risk and expense.

So here are my questions :

How much would this whole operation cost me with or without a new windshield. Are there still new windshields around, what do they cost ? Are there second hand windshields around and what do they cost ?

Thanks for help guys, may the "P" force be with U.

WSP964.

WSP

I am just starting a similar project, except my rust bubble is at the bottom of the rear screen. In order to respray the whole roof as well though, the front screen needs to come out and I was warned about exactly the same thing happening - potentially a broken windscreen.

My solution here in the UK is that most insurance policies have separate windscreen cover which doesn't affect your main policy. My windscreen has a couple of stonechips anyway, so I will get the work done by the bodyshop including removal of the front screen and then Autoglass or whoever will fit a new windscreen through my insurance. This will save me some money.

The problem that you have is that you are in Belgium (from your profile) so price, availability and options may be totally different to anywhere else. FWIW, I was quoted a minimum of £500 for my repair which includes respray. Whether this is relevant to your situation remains to be seen.

Good luck!

Dear Wsp964,
Plan on getting a new windshield. Christer is toally correct. Claim windshield on your insurance. Stone damage. If the windshield has been correctly installed the only economic way to get it out is to break it. If the windshield has been incorrectly installed which is quite common in the UK then it may be removed without breaking and you have just found out why the rust bubble started in the first place. If your windshield has not been glued or sealed into place you will often end up with rust. Oh by the way. Get a new proper windshield and a new proper Porsche seal. Do not use aftermarket copies of the seal because they never fit properly and your rust fix will be temporary.
Ciao,
Adrian

Wow what a fast response, what a board ! Thanks Christer, nice to see read you again Adrian !

I just checked out of curiousity the price tag of a new windshield at a Carglass center. They quoted me around 950$ installation included, lifetime garantuee.

I guess that the worst case scenario (windshield broken while removing it) bill will be 950$ windshield + aprox 600$ body work ...

Honestly I was quiet surprised by the price tag of a windshield .....

Hi guys,

I was just floating around the different forums to see what's being posted as I try to move to a new to me Porsche. ANyway I am trying to get to the 911 body style. On the 993 forum there has been discussion of a TSB on the rust issue. I know Porsche has a 10 year Rust & Corrosion Warranty, but I don't remember when it was implemented. Your cars may still be covered. Here's the link to the PDF of the TSB <a href="http://www.electrichummus.com/993WindowRust.pdf" target="_blank">993 Window Rust TSB</a>. Who knows, maybe it will save you some cash. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

You see what driving in the rain does to your car? (Sorry... I just had to do that!)
