Post Wiper Reversal

Anyone reverse the wiper park position of their LHD cars so that the wipers "park" on the right side, rather than the left side. Tom Sharpes has a tech article over on Pelican, but it appears it is for a 1989 or earlier car. Search on the 964 BBS here indicates this topic not discussed previously.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_wiper_reversal_files/911_wiper_reversal.htm

Is there a reason why Porsche parks the wiper on the left side, in front of the driver?

To find the reason, see what happens when you are a passenger...

Most cars have the wipers pretty well vertical when they are over at the driver's side and horizontal when at the passenger's (a 90 -100 degree sweep). This means that the parked blades prevent the water 'gathered' by the wipers' final stroke from rising up the screen.

Because the 911's wipers sweep 180 degrees or so, both sides of the screen suffer from the 'gathered water' effect. The driver is protected from this rising up the screen by the parked blades. The passenger has to put up with a rising trail of water each time the wipers are parked.

Well done John! I pondered this question last night and did not get close to the answer! But I must ask did you work it out or know the answer already?!

I must admit that I have already discovered this due to my girlfriend always asking if I can 'just use the wiper one more time' as the water rises on the passenger side of the screen. I did not relate this issue to this post though!

Those clever Porsche engineers! Thanks, John, for the explanation.

As it's very unusual for me to drive without a passenger, I worked this one out early on in my 911 ownership!

It can be very frustating, especially if the weather's nice but you want to wash the screen. You have to keep 'going back' just one more time to clear the trails from the passenger's side. Of course, while you are doing this, you are re-smearing the driver's side!

Of course, it's the little foibles that make us love them so much.
