Default ?s about 1990 011 C4

I want to buy a used Porsche to drive for about a year until some personal finances free up. Looking at a 1990 911 C4 red exterior/black interior and drives fantastic. But - I have two questions before I buy:
1 - I've heard the 1990 model has gear box issues. Is this true?
2 - Is there a better year to buy in order for the car to hold its value until I sell it. I like the 1995s but haven't yet found one in my price range.
Thanks in advance for the help!

If you haven't already, you may want to read the 964 FAQ here.

No gearbox issues, the 964 has the G50 5 speed, which is the strongest (and last) 5 speed in 911s. Read the FAQ, possibly get "The Used 911 Story" by Peter Zimmerman. It's a great used Porsche buying guide.

90 964 issues are:
Dual mass flywheel problem - see if it has been replaced with a LUK model
Distributor belt problem - see if the belt has been replaced and a breather kit installed
Head-cylinder seepage - see if a head gasket retrofit has been done (89-91 have no head gasket)

A good PPI is always a must, no way around it.

Welcome to Rennlist!

The 964 runs from 1989 1/2 to 1994. A 1995 model would therefore be a 993 so the guys/gals in that forum can answer questions for you.

I've never heard of any problems related specifically to the 1990 gearbox - the gearbox is very strong and durable. There are other issues like oil leaks, flywheels, dual distributors, etc that need to be considered with a 964 - but they don't have the RMS problems (or failed engines) that some 993's do.

A PPI by an experienced garage is crucial before any purchase as p-cars can get expensive to fix.

You might want to try searching the archives (search function in the top band of the forum) for other suggestions.

Marc
