Post Had my car for 1 year today!

OK

had the 92 C2 Tip for 1 year today. Covered 9127 miles with generaly, a large grin. In total, including purchase, I have spent £20k. This includes my last major service, 4 new tyres, lowering etc.

Though, this doesn't include petrol ,which has probably been £21k!!!

Don't regret the purchase for a single minute, though now contemplating whether to keep tis car long term, & therefore spend money on rebuild/oil leak/ supercharger

OR

trade for a 993 and start again.

Only time will tell.

John

A few coincidences:

- I bought mine 5.10.02
- I've covered 10K miles
- Cost inc. service, chip, tyres, cat bypass etc £21K
- No regrets...thrilled every time I get in it...except in London traffic.
- Similar contemplation! Keep for a while or trade 'up'? Just don't feel a 993 is 'worth' an extra £10K, 993TT beyond budget...what else?

Problems, problems!

Guys,

The 964 is a a wonderful car, but I have to admit that I have not regretted for a single moment "upgrading" to the 993.

I also went down the path of trying to modify the 964 during my years owning it, and all I can say is that, for the modifications that I did (and the dollars spent), I was less than pleased with the results versus the money spent...Porsche really knew what they were doing. In hindsight, the money spent modifying the car could have actually got me into a 993 much sooner.

If you like the 964 and hate the 993, by all means, modify it to "keep the excitement" going on the 964, but if you even have an inkling that you want to trade to a 993 at some time in the future, my belief is that you should just hold onto your cash, enjoy the 964 for what it is, then buy a 993 later.

Whilst I am still probably in the honey moon period of ownership with my 993, I have to say that, for me, this car is PERFECT...looks, daily driveability, reliability (ok, so it only has 17,000 miles on it), sportiness, and that lovely belief that this was the last of the truly great air cooled machines.

I dont think I will ever sell this baby (although I remember saying that about the 964...).

Wink

I have owned this car since 18 November last year, but have known it for a few months longer..

My total cost so far including purchase, 24k service, new clutch, new 17" OE wheels and Kumho Ecsta 712's and £400 worth of 'incidentals' is around £19250...It must be the pinstripes that devalue the car. Oh sorry, add £85 for a new battery...

I haven't regretted it either, it's the only car I have ever owned that I actually enjoy driving both fast andslow!

I don't know about the future. I would say I will keep it forever, but know that I probably won't. One thing I am certain of is that I need a 911 in my life - who knows what it will be? a 993 RS perhaps or a GT3? I am not somebody who can justify to myself spending £80k on a car, especially as I have picked up a few £40-50K cars in the past as used cars and saved 60% of the purchase price.

I really want a GT3, and once they come down under the £50K mark I will evaluate then. This will probably not stop me spending some money on the C2 though!

Hi,
Oh dear. The final confirmation that my car has cost me WAY too much.

I've had it just over 1 year (5th Sep 01), and paid £17.5K for it. Since then it's cost me about... er, £11-12K - and that doesn't include insurance. You know when you're in trouble when you're not sure whether it's £11K or £12K!

Not the most sound investment I've ever made, and it does annoy me a bit that I'm now well into 993 territory. Still, it's a really sorted car now - honestly! Sadly, it's not worh £29K as a result but such is life.

Congrats John!

My vote is to hang on and upgrade--unless there's something so compelling about the 993 which warrants a move.

Not to start a flame but I believe the money situation is not comparable. So far, we've compared a modified 964 with a stock 993--okay that's about the same money. But who the hell doesn't modify their 993? Have you seen their board? They have several standard aero kit options and an equal number of suspension packages all in the $3K - $5K range. Harold, based on your well-documented history, I would guess even you have plans for a number of mods which would quickly transport you to 996 dollars!

I don't know if there's a right or wrong answer, but in terms of bang for buck, the 964 is the way to go.

Its going to be interesting over the next few years seeing who moves out and onto the 993 board. I'm glad Harold still spends time here.

Joey makes a good point about how the 993 owners spend dosh on their cars and if you visit the 993 Turbo board things get even more extreme there - lord knows what the $ per additional hp ratio is there but those guys sink serious cash into cars folks here lust after.....there probably is no cure for Porsche heroin, get hooked and just resign yourself to keeping spending....

As for me, well I've said before I am just plain in love with the looks of the 964 and when you combine that profile with the more modern drivetrain, I'm just happy. I guess I just don't see the 993 as an upgrade, and I definitely do not see a 996 as an upgrade.

I can see me buying a 993 tin top as a day car (US prices are still a bargain), especially when I move out of Pothole Hell (aka Michigan), but not if it meant moving my 964 cab on........I'm no longer as motivated to go the RUF turbo route as all my enquiries lead me to believe the true end cost will be more like $45k than $25k and, well, even I cannot justify that to "she-who-wears-the-pants-in-my-house"......

joey-b and ruairidh

now that i think about it, you guys are spot on....cant really compare dollar for dollar/model for model...things invariably get out of hand whichever model porsche we own...always something else to upgrade on the car....man, within the first week of owning the 993 i dumped cash into a set of brand new 18" RUF rims and tires!!! mind you i'm still trying to hold off on that M030 sport suspension arggghhhhh.....

oh yes, ruairidh...gotta say that I love hanging out on the 964 board...people here seem to have the best mix of commitment to their cars, sense of humour, and above all, friendship....check out some of the posts on the other boards... a lot of personality clashes that seem to unfortunately find their way into some pretty sarcastic, vindictive threads from time to time...

Yes Harold, aside from a few noteworthy exceptions (see above) , I agree that this board is populated by a fair number of good-natured and respectful individuals. Even when I've asked the stupidest questions, most people were able to retain their composure and keep the flame throwers in check. Yes, great board and great car!

I've had my C4 cab since February and done over 14,000 miles.

Before I bought it (£21,350), they spent £2,700 replacing the flywheel, clutch, master & slave cylinders, starter motor, rear disks & pads and a hood motor.

Since then I've spent £4,900 on front disks & pads, front lower wishbones, 17" wheels & Contis, strut brace, geometry set up, hood, double spring wipers and PIAA bulbs plus a service.

I now have a well sorted, all weather car. Having eliminated the dreadful understeer and instability at speed, I now love driving it.

Well, my car has cost me in the 1 year and 2 months I have had it exactly £3381. This includes servicing, tyres, some extra maintenance (dizzy belt) and some mimanaged spending (ie on things which didn't really need doing).

I like to think (although it might be hard to proove) that this was offset by virtually zero depreciation over the same period. I really think I could sell it for the same I bought it for.

I haven't and am not planning to do any form of upgrades either.
