Default A Cosmetic Nose-job

I recently re-dyed the front strip above my front bumper and thought I'd share it with my fellow addicts...err...I mean Rennlisters.

I don't have the part number handy, but the little rubber strip above my bumper at the front had become gray over time - likely with sun exposure and accumluated wax build-up on it. It was something that bugged me and I always planned to fix.

I bought a product from Pelican called "Forever Black" that is used to dye bumpers and applied it the other day. It comes with a special cleaner to use first (smells fruity ) then is applied with a sponge applicator from the bottle - like some shoe polishes.

I masked up the front as I was afraid of drips (but found out it does just wipe off the clear coat of the bumper, even after 24 hours, as some had managed to sneak under the tape I used to mask) and slobbed on 3 coats, 20 minutes apart. Then removed the masking the next day and wipped up a few dried drips easily.

You can see before, during, and after shots below. Quite a difference, I think!

This has been on my to-do list as well. I've tried a bunch of products, all with half-good results, but yours looks great. Thanks for the tip.

McGuires has a product called "Shine" for rejuvinating rubber and vynl. I've used it on interior surfaces as an alternative it Armorall and Lexol. I have also used it on exteriorsurfaces such as the "smile", the vinyl band around the flag mirrors and the windshield washed "squirters". It brings the surface back perfectly - eliminates the graying and discoloration - need to do it every second or third wash - takes five additional minutes and seems to build up last longer with each application.

I don't know why, but the second picture made me laugh!

Maybe it's the green lipstick.

Thanks, I needed that.

Gee, and here I had "fix the smile" still on my list of things to do - I guess I got that one done too

Marc:

Looks great! I have used a product called "Back to Black" (Meguires I think) for similar fixes. Even worked on side mirror frames which are plastic. I didn't tape, wish I had...good idea!

By the way, 3M makes a tape called 2070 (white masking tape found at a paint store, 2080 is the blue stuff). 2070 sticks like a post-it note. Might work well if you can't get the green automotive tape it looks like you used.
